Repurpose Waste Water

I live in the desert. Water is like gold, but is wasted more times than I care to mention. Here's some insight on how I "repurpose" water. Remember that you are paying for every drop that comes out of your faucet. Why not recycle it? I keep a plastic rectangle container (from the dollar store) on one side of my kitchen sink. When I am waiting for the water to heat, it goes into the container. I wash my hands over the container too. I use this water for everything and anything!

If I'm washing clothes that day, it goes in the washer. If I'm mopping my floor, it goes into the mop bucket. If my plants outside need a drink, it goes into my garden (remember soapy water does not hurt plants). If you keep the container nice and clean (sanitary) you can fill your ice cube trays (if you still use those). You can make drinks that call for water (Kool Aid, frozen juices, etc). You can even flush the toilet with water you have saved. These may not be convenient to do, it does take some effort, but you will notice the reward on your next water bill. Make a conscious effort and you can lower your water bill. I also have ways of cutting down on electric and gas!

I am a frugal "prepper". I use bottled water for my humidifier to minimize the mineral buildup that would result from tap water. I refill the bottle with boiled water and store wherever possible. I label the bottle cap with a black marker. TAP underlined signifies that this is boiled tap water, ready to be used without further purification.

Here is where your suggestion to save water comes in. By filling the empty bottle while waiting for the water from the tap to get hot, I will then boil it in a pot on the stove, refill the this same bottle with the cooled boiled water, and label for storage. Thanks for your good reminder for saving water! That water is now in my container.

I save the shower water in the tub and use for washing the floors. Every way I can use it I do. I water my in and out plants too. I take a gal bucket and wash my outdoor furniture. I can tell you I reduced my bill by $10.00 a month just by going green. Potato water (vegetable water) is great for plant if you don't drown them.

This Spring I plan to wash the outside of my house with light bath water let it rinse by the rain then paint it. The bath water some bugs hate.So far I have gone from 11 units to 3 but it took 3 months to remember.
