Southern Chocolate Gravy

Growing up we were poor. My sisters tell me how my mom made Chocolate Gravy. They say we all loved it as we were poor so it was a meal that seemed like a treat. Our mother served it on hot biscuits. I'm not big on chocolate, maybe because we had it so much then. Anyway, I wanted to share just to see if anyone was brave enough to try it. I guess it's still big in the south.

Ingredients

  • 2 heaping tablespoons of cocoa
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon of butter

Directions

Mix the cocoa, flour, and the sugar in a pot with a fork or whisk until well blended. Add all of the other ingredients and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, over medium heat. Continue cooking until the gravy is the desired thickness. Serve hot over Cat Head biscuits with lots of butter.

It is AWESOME on ice cream. I've also used it as a substitute for icing on a chocolate cake, jsut drizzle it on and some of it soaks in. And I'll fess up, it's really good to sample by the spoonful :) My entire family loves it (if I share with them). Great on pancakes as a special treat and of course biscuits :) (10/30/2006)

In my family it was simply called pudding. If you add a little more flour, it makes a great chocolate pie too. Add a meringue and m-m-m-m-m-m (10/30/2006)

My mother raised 4 children on her own. One of my fondest memories is Chocolate Gravy and biscuits. I never thought of it as poor man's food, just good stuff. I wanted to make it for my kids as I enjoyed it so much. I live in Texas so people here eat it a lot. (10/30/2006)

My husband's family has a farm and this a favorite treat. We live in Missouri, I came from California and the first few years I would not touch "chocolate garvy for breakfast' as I called it. Well once I tried it YUM it was too good. We have it with biscuits. My husband's favorite winter breakfast. (10/30/2006)

My family has always eaten this since before I was born. It's just simple chocolate pudding, I wouldn't call it gravy myself. I enjoy it with biscuits and so do my children who will anytime welcome "dessert" like food. Mmmm, think I will make some tonight as dessert! (10/30/2006)

Oh I forgot to add for an extra special treat I add a handful of chocolate chips and let them melt into the chocolate goodness. We have this about 1 or 2 times a month in winter and my hubby begs for more. (10/31/2006)

Hello! OMG! I have been looking everywhere for this recipe! Same thing here, my mom would make home made biscuits and this gravy and it was like heaven. We were very poor also, but she always made a way. Thank you and God bless all. Nancy (10/31/2006)

I am glad you all enjoy the Chocolate gravy recipe. I am the baby of a large family (I am 54) I remember being at my Aun'ts house who also had a large family and she made this on a weekend morning when everyone was home. Oh for the taste of those homemade bisquits seems they just don't taste like that anymore. My most favorite thing ever is bisquits and gravy made with WHITE gravy, some call it milk gravy. But then too, we couldn't afford milk so my mom would use cream, which made it have a richer taste. I still make it often. I love all the things now that we HAD to eat then. (10/31/2006)

I thought our family was the only ones that ate this. My great grandma use to make it for my grandma, she made it for my mom and aunt and my mom made it for me and I make it for my family. We cheat sometimes and use the cook and serve Jello Chocolate pudding but for the most part I make it from scratch. Thank you for posting this and sharing it with people that may have never had such a special treat! (10/31/2006)

I moved to Arkansas from Nebraska with my (first) husband. On the way we stopped in Missouri to see his grandparents. His G-ma made Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits for my first morning in the south. It took my husband quite sometime to convince me that the gravy was GOOOOD! LOL.

Now living in Nevada, it takes me quite awhile to convince my family and friends that Chocolate Gravy is GOOOOD. :)

Thank You for posting and bringing back fond memories of my first taste of the south. (10/31/2006)

I just couldn't let this go by without commenting. Chocolate gravy brings back memories of my best friend when I was growing up. Sometimes I would spend the night with her on Sat night and before church on Sunday morning, her mother would make chocolate gravy and homemade biscuits. That was the best ever. I often tried to make it like her but somehow it was never the same. I will try your recipe. I have grandchildren now that I bet would love it. Thanks for bringing back some good memories. Cat head biscuits are an old version of *todays* biscuits. I'm sure. Biscuits today are much healthier. My mom used LARD (yes I remember seeing a 2 lb box of lard on the counter by the stove. She even fried eggs in lard!) I would use oil instead if you make them from scratch. Actually I use bisquick :) Just add water, but I add milk instead and a dab of vinegar. (the vinegar sours the milk and makes it taste like buttermilk biscuits) OR just use Buttermilk instead, even easier. :) (11/08/2006)

I lived in the South as a child, I now live up North. I have been telling my husband about "Chocolate Gravy," He thought I was crazy, he has never heard of it. I am sooo glad I found this recipe! I loved it when my mom fixed it on Sunday mornings, it was a real treat! I can't wait to make it for my girls this Sunday! Thank You Ariela!

This brings back fond memories. When I was 10, we moved to Arkansas, and my aunt always made it. Every time we have a family reunion she makes it for me. Mmm, good. (12/30/2008)

My family was from the boot-hill of Missouri and Arkansas. My Grandmother would make it and my Aunt Wonda. It was so good. Each time we would visit my Grandmother or my Aunt, they would make chocolate gravy for us. This brings back some many great memories. Thank you for taking me back in time for those great times. Thanks also for the recipe. I have never made it. Now I will try. (02/08/2009)

Perfect! My mom use to make this for us because her mother made it for her, and so on! My friends think I am weird because they didn't grow up on chocolate gravy. I'm making it for them tonight! It'll be a treat. :D (12/27/2009)
