Starting a Wisteria from a Cutting

My daughter has a wisteria bush and she wants to start one for me. How would she do that? She cut off a piece and put in water with no results.

Cut a limb off and put it in dirt. It's very easy to take root, keep damp. Good luck. (05/26/2010)

Starting a Wisteria from a Cutting

I just rooted one in rooting medium 3 weeks ago, it's a gel like substance and I got it from the local nursery. So far so good. Took a clipping of new growth about 5 inches long and stuck the end in the gel.

There's also another way which is how I got my original wisteria. My grandma had one out back and if you look along the ground near to the stem there are usually little runners you can dig up and plant. I planted 3 runners and only one took. (BTW, I keep mine in pots)

I have only tried striking a oleander using the water method. I found the trick was to keep it in a dark bottle and change the water regularly otherwise it goes all yucky. (05/26/2010)

I started this tree from one branch. I was too weak to cut the roots. I put dirt over the middle of the branch, and four years later I have this tree, and have given dozens pieces to start their own.

I've own Wisteria and instead of taking a cutting you can use your hand trowel and dig up a new starter with a root system right next to the vine. The pods fall and new growth begins; it's easy, but don't get one too large or you'll be digging the root system to China.

I own a wisteria and have always gotten new plants from the runners that touch the ground and are still on the vine. Just place soil over the runner and it will take root. You can then cut the runner with a nice root system and replant in your garden or pot. Wisteria likes acidic soil and when we moved to another location, I started another wisteria and in my location, the rich acidic soil had my new plant growing fast and produced flowers in two years time.

I also planted it in full sunlight and on a sturdy trellis.
