The Old Fashioned Iris

Photo Description
Many of you will be familiar with this flower. In the last century it adorned many flower beds and front lawns. If it has a registered name, I don't know what it is. Most home growers knew the flower by it's very common name, 'Flags'.

I tried to get a number count for all the registered bearded iris. I thought it would make this post a bit more interesting. I couldn't find one. There was/is a lady in my city who had/has an iris farm. The last time I visited her farm was about 25 years ago. I asked her how many different iris she had. She replied "Well over 5000". Hers was a rather small collection.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say there are probably around 50,000 different bearded iris. Make that 50,001. I crossed two iris years ago and came up with my own unique hybrid. Crossing iris is rather simple. Most anyone could do it. It's not like crossing roses, where knowing chromosome count and other esoteric data is very important.

Regardless how many different bearded iris there are, I feel sure that simply because the flag I have pictured has been around so long, and probably much used for breeding purposes; most of it's genetic information is coursing through thousands of the beautiful, modern day iris. With the iris being (at least to me), the most beautiful flower in the world, this lowly flag has left quite a legacy.

Tomorrow, I will dig up these modest, old fashioned flowers and place them by the curbside. I will put up a sign that says 'Free Iris'. And you can bet your Sweet Aspidistra, I won't give them all away. For the most beautiful flower in the world, I want at least one copy of as many as I can get.

Wish I lived by you. I would take yours and share mine. I have many colors and kinds. Some grow wild in Louisiana ditches and can bloom 10 times...

You could try buying them from this site. They have giant fields of iris that grow off I-5 near Salem, OR. The ones on this page are considered "historical" so there should be a good one that matches what you are looking for.
