How and when did you get your pet?
I found Tom and his sister Geri after leaving from a friend's house. My friend lives in a rural area surrounded mostly by wine vineyards. It had been pouring rain on and off for 2 days and it was sprinkling as I pulled out of my friend's driveway. About half a mile down the road I noticed a small cardboard box a few feet from the side of the road. The box was leaning against a power pole and a vineyard was on the opposite side of the road. Due to the rain and wind, I was driving much slower than normal. The box was barely standing, as the rain had soaked it so much half of it had caved in. As I drove past it, I looked in my rear view mirror and noticed something come out of the box. I could see a greyish tail, but not much more. Being the animal lover that I am, I stopped and drove back to where the box was. That's when I saw a skinny, rain soaked grey kitten. He was purring and purring and I heard a second purr coming from inside the wet box. Inside was another skinny rain soaked kitten, a black one, Geri. I always have dog and cat food in my truck. I approached them with food and a blanket. They didn't put up much resistance. Poor things were starving, soaking wet, scared, and trembling cold. I placed them in my truck and armed with more cat food I searched the area for more kittens and possibly a mama cat, but didn't find either. Once home I dried them off and let them stay in the guest room where they mostly slept for the next 2 days. At this point I realized they were feral kittens so I began socializing them. I wanted them to have the best chance of being placed in a loving home. I placed Geri in a loving forever home with a good friend of mine. Tom stayed with me at home. He has 2 brothers (my 2 dogs) and a female feline sister, a male feline brother, and a male cockatoo brother (this cockatoo was neglected and lived in an abusive home in a dark room).

What does your pet like to do for fun?
Tom is still a kitten and very much acts like one. Those big green eyes of his are so beautuful it was hard to get upset with him when he knocked over the vase with flowers I received as a gift on my birthday. When he decided to knock over the jars used to store screws and nails, it wasn't as hard to get upset since he had done it once before. But still it is difficult when he stares at you with those eyes. He enjoys hiding from his brothers and sisters and then scaring them by jumping out of his hiding spot. He is home and free to do whatever he wants to.

Do you have anything else to share about your pet?
I will never understand people who treat animals so cruelly and so heartlessly. There is no excuse for the abandonment of any animal. None. I really wish we had stricter laws that were actually enforced for the protection of animals. Animals are capable of feeling what we feel. Please respect all living creatures. Report all suspected animal abuse to your lical SPCA, Humane Society, or local police dept. Never buy animals from a pet store. Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die. And please spay and neuter all pets.

What an adorable cat! I am an animal lover also and as you so eloquently wrote in your posting, it is difficult to believe that people will and do continue to abuse these loving creatures.

I really loved reading your story (you sound a lot like another favorite TF poster) and hope you will find time to contribute more stories to this site.

Wow Betty, thank you so much. You are too kind. I have to tell you, your message made my day. My week actually. Nicest words ive heard in quite awhile. Thank you so very much. Yes, Tom is adorable. I just dont understand how a person can be so cruel and heartless to abandon animals that way. I have had 6 wonderful years with my best friend Chance. He was abandoned near the city landfill, several miles out of town and in the middle of nowhere. Had my mothers husband not made a wrong turn and not ended up where he did the day he found Chance, he surely would have been killed by coyotes or wild boar.

He is a small white poodle mix. Everyone in town knows him by name. Nobody knows mine. I am simply referred to as Chance's owner. Thats ok though. He loves the attention. I love telling his story to people that stop to greet or pet him because it helps bring awareness about animal abandonment. Betty i hope you have a wonderful 4th of July. Thank you again.
