My mower has always drained the battery dead. I've replaced several times. Now I just put the charger on it prior to mowing. My problem is now, as soon as I connect the battery charger, the starter starts turning. I don't even have the key on. What is the problem here?

Your solenoid is stuck open. Bang it with a hammer or wrench or replace it. Easy fix but kind of hard to get too but look for a inspection cover and remove it to gain access to it. Best of luck.
