Turn Off Water Heater To Save Energy

A temperature switch on a hot water heater. We turn off the breaker to the hot water heater. In the summer, we rarely turn it on. The water is always warm. We shower in that warm water. The temperature is perfect for showering in the summer and we wash the dishes by hand in the same warm water.

We turn the breaker on for exactly 15 minutes before using the dishwasher. They are spotless! It's plenty hot! Wash your clothes in the washing machine with warm or cold water. Our clothes look perfectly clean. Try it, you'll be boasting about your lower utility bill!

Source: My inspiration in turning the hot water heater breaker came from talking to our utility company representative. She attended a seminar on electricity conservation. She said she saved a big by doing this.

We also have done this, for years and nothing eats up more electricity than a electric water heater. I too try to save $$$ and this has really helped with our bill.

I, too, turn my water heater off, except when taking a shower, and washing my dishes. My electric bill was around $300. It went down to $150. My bf got me doing this.

I finally woke up to this little trick. One of my tenants had turned up my hot water tank without asking my permission. I discovered it after she moved out. While I have a gas tank it's ignition is electricity. My electric bill dropped by $10/mo. This is a rarely talked about savings and good for you for bringing it up.

One additional tip: In case of a disaster and you need drinking water take it from your hot water tank! It's very clean & you don't have to run out & buy bottled water.

That was the photo submitted with the tip. It was probably a mistake when our editors created the title. I've changed it from Electricity to Energy to be more clear.
