Use Nylon Netting For Scrubbers

Stiff nylon netting scraps make great scrubbers for dishes, car bumpers/windows, bathroom porcelain, and removing paint with stripper. Their holes catch raised food/dirt/paint and remove it. Nylon net is perfectly paired with baking soda as an abrasive, as both will not leave scratches on surfaces you're cleaning.

I've been using netties I've made from nylon net to clean my dishes for many, many years. I hate using anything else. (01/27/2008)

I use the mesh bags that onions, garlic, fruit, etc. come in from the produce dept at the grocery store. After the bag is empty, cut off the metal clamp or the plastic end, then fold or scrunch up the bag and use to scrub dishes, pots & pans, sinks, anything that needs cleaning without causing scratches. Sometimes I save up several mesh bags, fold them up into a small pad and use a rubber band to hold it together on the top or end. These work just as well as the store bought scrubbies and I've recycled the mesh bags! (01/27/2008)

I use the mesh bags that go around frozen turkeys, from fruit, etc, too. I fold them into rectangles and crochet around the outside edges for a finished look (sometimes I double or triple them for puffier scrubbies). I wait until I have a bunch of bags, then do the crochet while watching TV. This way I make several at a time. They last a long time, so by the time I need more, I have quite a few bags waiting. I have the pattern and would gladly share, but need to know where to buy the netting by the yard. (07/12/2008)

To Cheryl: In Oregon we can buy nylon netting at JoAnn Fabrics. I would think any large fabric store would have it, probably even Walmart. (07/12/2008)

I just did a google search for nylon net scrubbers and found a site for Heloise with directions for making them.

1) Cut 3 strips of net 6" x 72" (that's the width of the net)
2) Using a large needle and dental floss or heavy thread, run a basting stitch from one end to the other in the center.
3) Hold the needle and using the other hand gather the net tightly.
4) Wrap the floss/thread around the middle of the gathered net and make a knot.
5) Separate the layers and you have a scrubber! (07/12/2008)
