Using Zanfel for Itch from Poison Ivy?

Bronze Request Medal for All Time! 55 Requests

Is there a good cream for the itch from poison ivy? I've had the bad experience of getting poison ivy again, this is the second year. I've never had it before until last year and this year. I've gone to the doctor and was prescribed some pills and cream for the itch and rash.

It's been over a month and I still have the rash. It's slowly going away. My question is: There is an over the counter cream called Zanfel that is sold at Walgreens in a little tube for over $35.00 that is suppose to stop the itch within 30 seconds and start clearing up the rash by the second day! Has anyone ever tried this cream and does it really work? Is it worth the money for such a small amount? I have relatives that swear that it works great, but I reviewed it and found others that would not buy the stuff and said it didn't work at all. Should I buy this or not? Is there a generic brand that would work better and cheaper? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hi - Poison Ivy can be nasty and long lasting. Thrifty has some very good suggestion from past letters. Click on the Thrifty logo and then put poison ivy into the "search" spot and you will find lots of tips.

Here is a remedy for past Thrifty posts:

Tecnu Spray for Treating Poison Ivy Rash

I had it all over my arms and ankles. I tried alcohol, aloe, witch hazel, dish soap, lemon, etc.! No relief, the itch was killing me. It would wake me up in the middle of the night!

Finally, what finally dried it up after a week is a spray called Tecnu. It's at Walgreens or CVS. It is awesome. It cures the itch, cools the area and dried it up. It cost me $14.00 at CVS.

Last summer I had poison ivy real bad. I tried my bottle of hand sanitizer gel.(like Purel) It worked! Not only did it stop the itch, it dried up the rash.

I did have to reapply every few hour when it started itching again, but the rash was gone within 2 days.

Not everyone's body chemistry is the same, what works for one might not work for the other person. I'd buy the cream, if it doesn't work sell the rest of the tube to your relative.

I like a product called Solarcaine: Aloe Extra Burn Relief. It has lidocaine, and it stopped the poison ivy itching far better than hydrocortisone.

It's made for sunburn, but it really worked for my poison ivy. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was quite inexpensive.

Fels Naptha Soap can be bought at Walmart now and several other stores. It works best and fastest use a washcloth you can even break it up and put it in your laundry it doesn't smell pleasant but it works. DO NOT TAKE a bath use it in the shower....

I am nearing the end of my Poison ivy episode! I was weeding my grandpas garden and he did not tell me until afterwards that there was Poison ivy by the corn! Anyway I am a cna and I cannot share my ivy with my patient! I bought Zanfel four days ago and it works! I used it three times a day for 4 days and my ivy is now drying up! At first I used anti itch cream, clear anti itch, an anti itch spray, and calamine lotion!

All helpful but my arms and legs still itched like crazy, it drive you nuts! As soon as I was done rubbing in the Zanfel, I got relief! This worked for me and it seems the entire tube was just enough! If it's out of control, go get a A steroid shot from your doctor! I am pretty sure Zanfel will work!
