Vicks Vapor Rub for Minor Burns

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 116 Feedbacks

For minor burns, such as steam burns in the kitchen, after running cold water on the burn, you can put Vicks Vapor Rub or a similar product on it and it will take the sting/soreness out of the burn!

DO NOT do this for serious burns, or before you try the cold water to stop the burn from going deeper. It only takes a tiny bit, but it really works!

I hate to disagree, but I believe that the preferred treatment for any burn, and especially minor burns, is to put nothing on it.

Yes. I said not to do this immediately. If you put anything greasy on a burn directly after it happens it will actually make the burn worse. This is why preferred first aid for any burn is to run cold water over it, or to treat it with ice.

I'm talking about an hour or so later when it's still stinging to treat the sting. It is a treatment of the remaining symptom (pain/stinging) only.

I grabbed a stainless steel frying pan handle straight from the Oven! I forgot that the oven was on, very stupid! I had my hand in ice water for more than 3 hours, the bad sting was still there, I googled Vicks and saw all the amazing testimonies , IT WORKED
thank you Vicks

Being a daughter of an EMT and sister of a firefighter, I have NEVER heard this. Go by what has been directed by 911 if you can, or use this guide from the Mayo Clinic:

It actually does work! I just put this on my sons hand after he burnt it spilling hot water on it. After an hour of cold water and ice he was still crying it hurt. I put vapo rub on it and he has calmed so much and keeps saying its like someone is blowing cold air on his hand. So just because of your training does not mean that something different cannot work.

I burned my pinky finger from a plastic spoon that melted on the burner and after running it under cold water trying to get the melted plastic off my finger it was stinging really badly, I read about applying Vicks vapor rub and I'm glad I had that at home and after about 20 minutes I was able to put a finger bandaid gently around it an finish typing my work. It definitely stopped the sting. Thank you for your post I'm so grateful.

I just tried Vicks on a minor burn (fry pan) and it really does work ! Almost instantly ! As you mentioned .. not for major burns and run cold water over it first.

I tried it on a whim , then googled and found this thread. Good stuff

I heard my skin.. instantly under cold water.. kept dunking handand keeping in pan of cold water as a trooper ...while finishing christmas meal... I counted 12 white blisters NOT GOOD.. so.. slept that night with vicks coating my hand in a zip lock of ice water...
By morning my hand was cupping my face seemed the salt from skin helped.. but I got up noticed no pain at all.. it was unbearable, to get to sleep hours ago..
No nothing.. no blisters ??? I had 12??. So each night for bext few nights slept with vicks and a laytex glove... skin is soft...better than before..where the liqued blisters went ??? Vicks n prayers.. but gone!! So it's a winner for me for sure
