Ways to Raise Money for a School Trip

My school is going on a trip to Orlando, Florida and it is going to cost about $900. I was wondering what are some ways that I can raise money and what are some jobs that I can get if I'm under 15?

If you have enough free time, people are always interested in a product they can use. I have had great luck with selling pies. If you want my easy crust recipe, email me at jimnreenie AT safelink.net and I'll send it to you. I usually get $6 for a fruit pie and $7.50 for a pecan pie. If you have a fruit tree, use what you have. Otherwise, you can buy gallon cans of apple slices at Costco very cheaply, or ask your grocer to order them for you. I can make about 20 pies on a given day. Bet you could do at least that well! Good luck! (09/14/2006)

My 14 yr old granddaughter has to raise $700.00 by March for her half of the $1400.00 school trip to New York. She is half way there. She babysits, does special projects for family and friends (weeding, washing windows, etc), has sold old items on e-Bay, had one car wash last weekend at her house ($5.00 donation asked..many tipped also), another one planned for beginning of March (we are in Louisiana). She earned $100.00. She gave her helper friend $1.00/car, plus some of the tip money, leaving her $80.00. It adds up quicker than you might think. The one rule we have is that she can't just blow someone off if they offer something she could make money with, unless she already has firm plans that her Mom has OKed. Good luck. (09/14/2006)

A few years ago I had a foster child, a teen, when I decided to go to a family gathering in NY. We lived in CA. I told her she could come if she could earn the money for her air fare. We made flower pens with silk flowers on ballpoint pens and she sold them at medical buildings, banks, strip malls (in the stores and salons) and to her teachers and to some of my friends and her social workers. They cost less than 30 cents to make, she sold them for $1. She sold enough for air fare and spending money-about $400. (09/14/2006)

When I was a kid, we used to rake leaves and shovel driveways and in the last 10 years we have lived at our house --- a neighborhood full of kids your age --- only two people have ever come by and asked if they could do this.

Find out what the minimum wage is in your area and ask for that or a bit higher.

Get fliers made (half sheet) and go door to door and pass out your fliers NOW. You will get a few jobs for the upcoming months.

The KEY and this is how we got our jobs is TO GO BACK say end of Oct with the leaves are down and people are already tired of this. they will want someone to do this.

Better off going to the nicer neighborhoods... they have the money but no time to do this.

McDonalds, Taco Bell etc hire under 16 age kids so do grocery stores for bagging. (09/14/2006)

Try putting an ad in your local newspaper, stating that you are a student trying to raise money for a school trip and would be willing to do odd jobs. A lot of businesses really appreciate a student willing to go out and work for something. We are small business owners and if I saw an ad in the paper I would find something for the student to do to help them out. There is always odd jobs that business don't like to do, maybe filing or stocking shelves.

I would suggest yard work, babysitting, washing cars, cleaning, running errands, shopping and everything else legal that you can do. Decide on a fixed fee per job and advertise at the library, church, local newspaper and by fliers. Target the elderly, infirm and single parents who may need these services but not be able to pay much. Make sure you render a high standard of services, so that your customers will tell others and also come back to you. Good luck! (09/17/2006)

I like the ebay idea. Also, for advertising, if you're in a major city, you can advertise for free on craigslist.com. You can also sell items locally that way, advertise a car wash or garage sale, etc.

As a mom, though, I'd hope you work closely with your parents so you stay safe if someone hires you for babysitting, yard work, cleaning, etc. Just use your brain!

Good luck, and have a great time on your trip! (09/19/2006)
