What Is This Houseplant?

What Is This Houseplant? - dark green leaves on long fleshy purplish stemsI bought this from a supermarket. It had bright orange flowers. It needs watering about twice a week, otherwise the leaves droop right down. How can I get it to cheer up - and flower?

It might be a bromeliad. It needs medium light and half-strength fertilizer monthly.

Thanks for such a speedy reply! I don't think it is as don't they have a "central trumpet or spike"? Whereas this had single flowers growing on long stems coming out of the leaf stems, where the stem meets the leaf.

Well, I first thought your plant might be a Philodendron Red Congo but Philodendron does not flower and the leaves are more pointed so more research is needed.

Here is a photo so you can see the plant itself is similar.

Maybe someone will have an answer soon.

Wow - you're right, they look SO similar, even down to the curled leaf stems! I managed to find a picture of a philodendron flower, but it doesn't look a bit like the orange petal mine made.... keeping my fingers crossed someone else knows!!

Thanks so much everyone! I think it must be the calathea (thoug ctenanthe does look very similar) - I've found some instructions online that say it likes to be much more humid and damp than I've made it. Am off to transplant and relocate to the bathroom! You're wonderful!
