What Is This Houseplant?

plant with green and white leavesIt's leaves have lots of tiny very pointy pricks on them! I really want to find out what it is - someone gave it to me. :)

I'm not sure. My first guess is a Bromeliad, though I don't grow them and am not familiar with the different varieties.

When you say pricks, I wonder if it is an Agave, but I have never seen one with stripes from side to side of the leaf. They usually run the length of the leaf.

It is a pink bromeliad. It is the same family as the pineapple : the bromeliaceae family.
Google its scientific name " Aechmea fasciata" for information about its special cares.
