What Kind Of Snake Is This?

I saw a snake in my backyard earlier today. I tried looking it up, but wasn't positive on it. I live in Virginia. The body way about a foot long, maybe a tad more. The thickest part of it was about an inch wide. It had a dark color base (black or a dark grey). There was one single yellow stripe running down the length of its body, along with various spots on each side of the single stripe. I thought the spots looked sorta like tiny diamond shapes. The head was really small compared to its body. It may have eaten recently or something because it was awkwardly slow while it slithered away. Not very smooth movement, kinda awkward like.

It sounds like a black snake or sometimes called a garden snake. Did you happen to see the shape of its head? Usually if they have a round shaped head they are not poisonous but if a spear shaped head they are. Same for their eyes, round pupils not poisonous diamond shaped pupils they are.
