Write Phone Number on Child's Arm

I have raised four kids, and I was a foster parent for 15 years. One of the things that I came up with when taking kids on day trips was to write my cell number on their arms in ink. That way, if they got lost or separated from me, they could have someone call me. They didn't have to worry about losing a piece of paper, and it was a little extra insurance with little ones who were too young to talk or learn my phone number!

This is one of the best tips I've ever read here on ThriftyFun!

Recently a 7 year old girl fell off of her bicycle in front of our house - poor thing scraped herself up knees and palms and was crying hysterically at the blood (not a heavy bleeding, but still blood and quite upsetting for her).

She and her friend were blocks from home but neither knew their phone number so we could ring for a parent or guardian! She clearly wasn't injured so badly that she needed an ambulance but she did need basic first aid, a blanket around her shoulders, and really, a hug from Mum. But without that phone number all we could do was ask her friend to run home for an adult while we did the best we could with wet paper towels and a lapghan.

Given the times we were very uncomfortable about even bringing the child any farther than our front steps while we waited with her for a family member to arrive.

All's well, the friend returned with her mum and I saw them a few days ago on their morning walk to school - she's fine, healing up nicely. But if only she'd had her mum's phone number written on her arm we could have spared her a 45 minute wait for a family member.

A friend of ours volunteers at the school. I'll pass this tip onto her and perhaps she and the head teacher can figure out a way to get the information out to parents. We live in a safe area so little ones do ride their bikes, roller skate, etc, and not all children of 7 years can memorise their telephone number.

Great tip, thank-you!

The best idea.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this. As a parent, I would write our phone number on the inside of our children's collar and inside their shirt on the bottom hem. Another place you can write your phone number is the tongue of their shoe.

Writing your phone number on their arm raises the possibility of someone with bad intentions of getting your phone number.

I think this is a great idea! As a parent, I think it is so important to have my phone number handy. My son is very shy, probably would not even cooperate with anyone if they asked him questions. Not to mention he is to young to know his phone number very well. I love this idea.

As for the comment about someone maybe getting the number, I think there are ways to hide it on the child, under the sleeve and such. I never leave my child out of sight but that wont always be the case (just as the bicycle comment here). great idea! Thanks for the share!
