You don't give your age, but I've found that most guys love getting things for their vehicles or something sports related. Is he into music - concert tickets or a vintage album from ebay? Designer sunglasses, sport shoes he's wanted, great wallet, link bracelet, tattoo certificate, book for college course he's taking over the summer, super haircut he can't afford, a fancy restaurant date with you covering the bill, tickets to something for just him and a guy friend.
You can also try gift certificates to itunes or the like - or farmville if he plays that, or similar online games.
My boyfriend is turning 15 in a week. What should I get him for his birthday? We've been dating 3 months and 6 days after his birthday will make 4 months.

How about if you take him to a movie he's been wanting to see, just the two of you, then go back to your house where a few friends are waiting for a small surprise party? You don't have to have elaborate refreshments, just some cake or party squares, chips and sodas.

Give him a memory/experience. If he has an interest or hobby, say classic cars, take him to a car show. Give him a magazine subscription that reflects his interest. He'll think of you every month for a year.. If he's a sports fan, could you get him tickets for a game?
Okay so my boyfriend is turning 15, and we've only been going out for 6 months, but are really serious. He's into bands and music, but already has an iPod and everything, and we're already going to a concert for his birthday (sponsored by his parents). How about an album with photos from the last 4 years; either photos of the 2 of you, or photos from the various teams/athletes he's coached along with "leadership" or "coaching" sayings to support all he's done for his teams.

Well depending on how old he is, being a lecturer I will assume he is at least in his 20's if not older, why not get him a recorder so he can record his lectures? It is a bit pricey but it is very high end, take a look at the H2 Handy Recorder by ZOOM. It allows for mono and stereo recording. It can be hooked up to a system as a standalone microphone as well. It has a USB interface to trasfer recordings from the H2 directly to your PC for editing or recording to CD. It isn't real expensive but it may be more than you were thinking about paying for a gift.

I just bought one a little over a month ago. A recorder would allow him to record any lecture and provide it to people who couldn't attend. It would also allow him to listen to his own lecture and take notes about things that could use improvement/clarity.
