I have a Singer sewing machine model 1120. While I'm sewing the thread breaks. How do I fix it?
The upper thread tension could be set too tight. Set the tension to the best thread tension setting or less. Make sure the spool of thread is installed correctly using the correct size spool cap for the size of spool.

You could have old thread, or you could be using the wrong Needle for the fabric.
i believe there are at least 10 different things that could be wrong as this is a common thing but not always for the same reason - the most common being tension set incorrectly - or - old thread - or - threaded incorrectly - or bobbin problem.
You can also try talking to someone in your area that has a sewing shop - their help is usually great and they may even help you fix it. Just Google sewing shops with your zip and ask for help. Also, Jo Ann's or Michael's craft stores many times have sewing people that might help.

Could it be the quality of the thread? There can be many reasons.. maybe a new needle is required? And so forth.

Normally the tension on your machine is set incorrectly. However, this can happen if your spool of thread is not spinning freely. Check the label on the bottom of your spool and remove it. Make sure the thread is sitting on the spool post and can spin freely.
Afterwards, check your thread once you have threaded your needle. Try pulling on the thread and making sure it moves freely and you can easily pull it through your needed. If the thread is hard to pull through the needle, don't force it. Remove the thread and try threading your machine again.
If this does not solve your problem you will need to adjust the tension on your machine.
I had similar problem with my thread constantly breaking. I soon learnt that using the correct needle eliminated the problem.
Try using the correct needle size for your material, it makes a huge difference.
I'm a novice sewer so purchased a Lil Sew & Sew machine and the moment it arrived I noticed that the needle clamp screw/thread hole was sitting strangely! Pretty much every time I've used the machine since then, the thread breaks! Some fabrics are a little better than others, but as I've done lots of troubleshooting (changed needles, change thread, checked tension, checked threading, etc.).
I feel that it must be down to the fact that the actual shaft where the needle goes in is twisted. So the flat back is slightly to the left and the tiny hole for the screw to fit in to hold the needle in place, is slightly to the right. Basically it's not sitting dead centre! Thus making the threading situation somewhat difficult too.Today I decided to open up the part of the machine that allows the shaft to move up and down in hopes that there would be a simple screw that loosens it so I could turn it into the correct position. Problem solved? Nope! I don't want to get too courageous and start unscrewing everything, but the one screw that I did loosen that seemed to be directly on the shaft didn't seem to do anything. Can anyone help or do I have to deal with just having a defective machine and my thread constantly breaking. Perhaps my instincts aren't correct and I have no idea what I'm talking about... in which case, any tips would be really helpful. Many thanks.

Here is the instructional video on the Little Sew and Sew Sewing Machine. I hope that it will be helpful in resolving your questions. I am thinking of getting one. I will watch how this turns out for you to see if it is going to be worth the money or not.

I have a New Home Janome machine and since the needle hit a pin and broke it, the top thread now breaks. I have changed the needle and I am using good quality thread.
Could it be that the feed plate teeth could be slightly damaged? It was working fine till this happened.I bet the food plate teeth are getting into it. On my machine, I can change the foot feed. If yours can be changed, try that.
It could be that or the needle plate is damaged, and the thread is tearing on that. You may need to replace either or both those parts.
Check for any burrs or rough spots in the needle plate that might have been caused by your needle breaking mishap. Burrs like this can cause fabric snares and thread breaks. Burrs can sometimes be smoothed with an emery board or fine sand paper.
Have you checked the the upper thread tension? It could be too tight. If it is then you can try lowering the tension (lower the number).
If you are still having problems try using this link to Janome support as they are always helpful and also have free manuals:
My needle broke so i changed it. Then I had days of having this same problem. The top thread kept breaking. Changed the thread, checked the tension, rethreaded numerous times, cleaned the machine, checked there as no damage to the dog feeder, checked the bobbin, made sure the needle was straight so I could see straight through the eye. Nothing worked. So I thought I'd just make sure that the needle was in the correct way round, i.e. the rounded bit facing forward and the flat part at the back. Low and behold it worked!!!
My daughter has a Lil Sew and Sew, but the thread keeps breaking. No matter how much we adjust the tension, the thread either breaks, or the stitches get looser.
A rough needle can cause the thread to break. Try a new needle.
you might also try to make sure you're not using thread that's too old or brittle.
As well, make sure you clear your thread path by using a small a spool as possible.

These are great for small repair jobs and very good for "beginners".
My Kenmore machine was working perfectly and then out of nowhere it starts sewing with extra thread hanging in little loops. Also, every now and then the upper thread breaks. What do I do?

When did you last have it thoroughly "serviced"? Have you changed thread quality? I found both these things could cause problems. Get your machine cleaned, oiled, etc. and make sure you use good thread, not the cheap junk from $1 store, etc. And good luck!
Depending on how old the machine is, the problem could be anything from dirty (lint clogged usually) tension discs, incorrectly set upper tension, old thread, wrong thread and needle for the fabric you're trying to sew, burrs in the needle eye, or (gulp) a worn bobbin gear. (Heh. Ask me how I know about worn bobbin gears!)
Try changing your needle and thread first and making sure your upper tension is set for the fabric and thread you are using.
If that doesn't help, try wetting a long piece of thin-ish dental floss with non-mentholated rubbing alcohol and putting it through the thread path paying especial attention to the upper tension area - if your's is the knob type that you wind the thread around, wind the floss through then use a gentle back and forth motion.
Now pull the floss out of the machine/tension discs - if the floss is grimey and/or dragging a lot of linty stuff, there's your problem. Repeat the flossing with clean floss wetted with the rubbing alcohol until the floss comes through TWICE without any grime or lint.
If that doesn't solve your problem it's time to schedule a visit to the Kenmore repair tech; repair including parts and a servicing (cleaning and oiling) shouldn't cost more than $100USD and is well worth it - Kenmore machines are good machines, nearly all the parts for even the oldest models are still being milled, and the certified techs learn repair of all models old and new. Kenmore (sold through USA Sears stores) home appliances including sewing machines have an excellent reputation for top-notch customer service, too.
No, I don't work for Sears:) Actually I'm a Singer sewer-teacher-self-trained repair tech, but I have a lot respect for the Kenmore brand.
Good luck, I hope you're back behind the needle soon!
This floss-alcohol solution worked like a charm!!!! That singer repair tech saved me at least two weeks of going-in-circles aggravation...He should be working for NASA!!!!
My model 15 Singer sewing machine SN# AK497758 is continually breaking the thread on the top. What can I do? I've re-threaded and put a new bobbin on.
I oiled and lubricated it as well. It just started doing this after I snagged the needle, breaking it in the process. Please help.Make sure there isnt a piece of needle snagging the machine. Also, make sure the thread is not old. Old thread dries out and breaks
Make sure your top thread spool didn't "backlash" and tighten thread around the spool holder. Also, try re-threading the machine from spool, all the way to needle, to make sure thread is running through tension discs correctly.
The upper thread on my LS14 keeps snapping since I bent a needle and replaced it. I've adjusted the tension, I've brushed down the needle holder, etc. I removed the bobbin holder to clean it and realised that a bent pin had been hiding under it. I removed the pin cleaned and put everything back together.
Now my thread keeps snapping and the machine makes a slight clunking noise before it snaps. It seems to struggle with any thickness (I'm talking a very thin seam thickness). I've removed the bobbin holder and replaced it, I've replaced the needle. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! Any suggestions?
When the needle bent, another part may have bent, too. Another possibility is that there is a rough edge on the part that bent. The thread is rubbing against a rough or bent part and frays to the point of snapping. If you cant find the faulty part, you may have to have the machine serviced.
When trying to sew on my Janome Memory Craft 6000, the cotton thread keeps breaking or gathering underneath. I have changed the cotton, checked the tension, and redone the threading on top and bobbin.
Can you please help me?Check that the bobbin isn't in backwards. It can cause that problem
Old thread or poor quality thread breaks easily. Try a fresh spool.
My bobbin case is chipped. Are there any do-it-yourself fixes for this? Also my top thread keeps breaking.
You can replace those cases fairly cheaply. I found a replacement part (bobbin case) for mine on ebay.
Once it is chipped, you have to replace it. If it is a tiny chip, you could try filing it, but I think it is shot.
My upper thread is breaking when a thick fabric is stitched. The thread is breaking frequently. I tried changing the tension. Mine is Singer sewing machine.
Your thread may be old, too thin, or the needle may be wrong.
I have a Gemsy, model gem8900, industrial machine. When the footpedal is stepped on hard the top thread breaks. Why is that? Please help. I am getting frustrated.
Your tension may be too tight. You may also have old thread, which breaks easily.
There are a number of common reasons for the bobbin thread in your sewing machine to break. Resolving these issues will make sewing easier. This is a page about fixing bobbin thread that keeps breaking.
