For a great savings rate, buy Series I Savings Bonds. The Pros: You will earn over 5% interest, they are insured by the US Government and you can buy them for as little as $50. You only pay fed tax on the interest.

| January Spending Freeze
Just an update on the January Spending Freeze. Thank you for all the terrific responses! So far, so good (of course, today is only the 8th!) I have managed to steer clear of my beloved Goodwill and other local thrift and resale shops, have brought my lunch to work each day, and didn't buy any extras at the grocery store.

| Saving Your Raises
I recently got my annual raise and have been putting it into savings. If i don't use it, it's like i never got it! A friend of mine read somewhere (not sure where) that a person has been living on the same salary for 10 years by doing this! So yes, it can be done!

| Spending Freeze Tips
Tomorrow is the first day of my January Spending Freeze, that means no spending other than the essentials: bills, gasoline and groceries. No more McDonald's for lunch, I will bring something from home. No books or CDs, no visits to the antique mall, no fundraisers, no lottery tickets, absolutely no extras for one month. Has anyone done this? If so, I would love to hear from you with your thoughts or advice. Happy New Year to All!

With gas prices decreasing, I have been putting the difference from what I was paying for gas (with the high prices) to what I am currently paying in savings. Wow, this is really starting to add up nicely!

| Save Change Throughout The Year
I have found an easy way to save money for Christmas... I never give the exact change when buying something. I put all of the loose change I have received for that day in a money jar. It really adds up fast.

| Saving Coupon Savings
Here is an easy way to save. Whenever I use coupons, I put the amount that I have saved in a jar (usually an old, well cleaned mayonnaise jar). When it is full, I take it to the bank and make a deposit into my savings account.
