Gardening: Flowering Container
This was my favorite planting last summer. I enjoyed all of the vibrant colors mixed together. The mix contains geraniums, begonias, a blue salvia, petunia, and dahlia, with 2 spikes for interest. This planting was in a partial sun area and the dahlia did not do well.

Wintering a Container Garden
I live on the 11th floor of an apartment tower facing Lake Erie (North) but we get an incredible amount of sun. Last year I had a fabulous container garden. I know than anything in terra cotta must be brought in to avoid cracking.

Potatoes in Tires
We just had our first frost last week, and I dug up my potatoes grown in a tire stack. I was disappointed to find only 6 potatoes. I planted 3 seed potatoes in the initial tire, and partially covered the greens, as they appeared to a final height of 5 tires. Any suggestions as to what went wrong. It would be helpful for next years attempt. Thanks.

Growing Tomatoes on the Balcony
The thing we missed most when we moved from the country to a city apartment was our home-grown tomatoes. So we planted some on our balcony! Remember they don't have natural drainage, so allow for that and for fertilizer. We put gravel in the pots before adding soil and nutrients (Miracle-gro has a great garden soil that works well for us.) When plants grow taller than your stakes, just tie them to your balcony railing! Enjoy all summer!

Growing Lemon Trees in Containers
I need help with my lemon tree. It is small, about 3 ft tall and in a container. It does have about 5 baby lemons growing. The leaves look like they are wilting.. I do give it citrus fertilizer once a month.

Upside-Down Tomato Buckets
My husband built this frame work to hold three tomato plants. The grass in the top of the buckets helps hold the moisture in. He cuts it with a scissors. The chains on each side allows him to raise the buckets as needed.

Coffee Filter for Potting
You can use a paper coffee filter to put in a flower pot to cover the hole, before putting the soil in. It keeps the soil from running out when being watered.

Use Spray Paint to Update Plastic Garden Planters
The large terracotta-colored pot we used last summer for our porch planter just did not look right with the selection of coleus and other shade plants we wanted to use this year.
