Mosquitoes Biting My Dog

My dog and I love to walk by the river in the evening. However, the mosquitoes are terrible. Does anybody have a safe home remedy to repel mosquitos for my dog? And once she is bitten she scratches and scratches and seems miserable! Does anybody know a remedy to relieve her itching? We are also planning to walk away from the water and during the day when there are less mosquitoes.
