Digital Scrapbooking

I am thinking about starting digital scrapbooking and want to make one for my son's high school years. I got a program, but it doesn't say what type of paper I need to print my pages on so that they will last. Can someone give me some insight on how to start this project, and what supplies I will need? Should I order the pages offline, or print at home, etc.?
