Problems Hanging Shelves

I have just hammered a hole in my wall. I am trying to hang up some shelves so as to give myself some storage space. i have become comfortable with the drill, but now I have 6 holes and no shelf. What am I doing wrong? The first 3 holes there was resistance when I tried to put in the reinforcements. Then I made 3 more holes and the reinforcements wouldn't go in at all. I got so mad at myself I hammered and made a mess in my wall. I have no money to pay someone to hang the shelves or to fix what I have destroyed. What do I do?
