Updating My Kitchen Cabinets

I am buying a house with a traditional styled solid wood kitchen in good condition. It has modern integrated black appliances and a solid wood matching floor. I would like to update the work surfaces, walls, tiles and handles as an economical way to update the rather "old fashioned" look.

Any ideas on materials or colours to tie in harmoniously with existing items?
