Growing: Coreopsis (Tickseed)

By Ellen Brown

Growing: Coreopsis (Tickseed)
Botanical Name: Coreopsis
Life Cycle: perennial (annual types available)
Planting Time: spring or fall
Height: 1' to 3'
Exposure: full sun
Soil: average to rich, well-drained soil; very drought resistant
Hardiness: zones 3 to 9
Bloom Time: summer
Flower: shades of yellow or gold (some hybrids also red or pink); single or double daisy-like flowers
Foliage: green
Propagation: seeds or division in early spring
Suggested Use: beds, borders, mass plantings, cut flowers and dried flowers
Growing Hints: Buy starter plants or sow seeds directly into garden in the summer. Seeds can also be started indoors from 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last spring frost date. If plants start to get leggy and ragged during midsummer heat, cutting them to the ground will reinvigorate them. Divide every 2 to 3 years in the spring. Northern climates should protect roots with mulch over winter.
Interesting Facts: The Coreopsis gets the nickname "Tickseed" due to the fact that its seeds resemble ticks.
