Keep Your Freezer Cold During Power Outages
What I have done for some time is to empty plastic milk cartons and fill them with water. This will not take up much room in your freezer. If your power does go out, at least the ice in the carton will keep your food cold. Keep the doors shut as much as possible.
You never know when your power will go out or for how long. I just wanted to share this with others as in the past I did try to use dry ice and found it does not last that long. This way what do you have to lose. Best of all it is FREE! - JSRS

An often overlooked and very useful tip is rock salt (or "ice cream salt"). You can move items from your freezer into ice chests, fill the chests with ice and add large amounts of rock salt. The rock salt makes the ice a LOT colder and will even make the chest capable of freezing water. That's how well it works!

Not only is this a good idea for emergency situations, but keeping the freezer filled with frozen items will reduce the number of times the compressor needs to run in order to retain the temperature setting.

In addition to using the frozen water in empty milk cartons,cover your freezer with quilts or blankets to insulate the freezer to keep food frozen longer.
