I have a 6 month old Westipoo that stopped eating his dry dog food, but if I put some canned dog food in food in his bowl with the dry, he will only eat the web stuff and leave the dry.

Hey guys my chi stopped eating! She is about two years old and has been living in texas. Four months ago, I brought her to California, separating her from her brothers. She came to her new home. I fed her the same food as she's been having in Texas, and she ate for about a month. But gradually her weight just dropped. She's so thin in plain sight! I'm really worried and stressed. Help please! I really don't want her to depend on wet food.

I'm going through this very situation right now, We have had Toad or mini chihuahua for almost a year now, and we recently added another( Ichabod).
Icky is growing bigger and bigger while Toad is starting to lose wait rapidly, Ive looked for the BARF food at my local pet store, but I was unable to find it.
I'm going to try the baby food, I think that may help. I will keep you guys posted if I can figure out which one works.

My 14 year old chihuahua has stopped eating and has lost a lot of weight lately and I don't know what to do. I lost my older female chi in January and she lost weight the year preceding her death. I don't know if this is the same for my Bailey but he has been sick with CHF for a few years now. I was just wondering if there is anything I can give him to encourage him to eat and put on some weight. Thank you for any help.\

a jar of babyfood, preferable chicken or beef usually gets them going enough to start eating again. The trick is to smash some on the roof of their mouth and then put just a spoonful on a plate in front of them. If they gobble it all up, wait a few minutes until they are really begging for more. Then when you get them started eating it regularly, start mixing it with their reg food. until you don't have to use it anymore. In the meantime you can purchase energel from the vet to put in their mouth to help with bloodsugar and to stimulate their eating. Often what happens is they don't eat, blood sugar starts to drop, then they really don't want to eat cuz they don't feel good, and it becomes a vicious cycle.

Hi, first of all well done. Barf is the best way to feed your dogs!!! You say you prepare the food at home, have you tried purchasing the ready made Barf patties? I am in Australia and we buy Barf from Big Dog, where Barf is produced on site, otherwise it is available at pet super stores. The Barf comes in several different varieties chicken, lamb, roo etc. Do you also give the bones, being a small dog you could try cutting up chicken frames, turkey necks etc into smaller pieces to suit. We also buy fish heads...i know it sounds gross but it is so good for them. I applaud you for feeding your dog Barf, we have converted so many people, dry and processed foods are really not healthy for dogs. Ruby my shepherd x Husky, does get sick of certain bones at times, so I just chop and change from chicken to turkey to lamb and so on. Good luck :)

If your Dogies don't want to eat dog food then make them food that is ingestable to them like chicken and rice etc.. that is what i do and she (My Chihuahua) is a fatty healthy dog and she eats properly but make sure that what you make her is ingestable to the dog

This happened recently with one of our rescue dogs. He is very tiny and we were so worried that if he continued to refuse to eat, his blood sugar would drop like you said, and he can't afford to have that happen or to lose any more weight, either.
Since we feed dry food, I decided to try a bit of low sodium, low fat canned chicken broth drizzled over his food. Eureka! He loved it and has been happily eating his food ever since with no more refusal.
He only gets 1/4 C of food at each of his two feedings, and all it takes is about 2 tablespoons of broth. Whenever I need to open a new can, I pour the broth into a squeeze bottle and keep it in the fridge, then squeeze out just a bit over the dry food in each feeding dish at mealtime. So simple!
We discovered this little trick also keeps our other rescue dog from choking on her food from eating too fast. Now we have two very happy little dogs, and it's not an expensive fix at all.

When you have a dog quit eating like that, the first thing to do is ask yourself if there have been any changes in the dog's life/routine. A new family member, a family member leaves, or someone is ill. Moving to a new home.... In the case of the chihuahua- it would be the new 'family' member. This is a big adjustment-there's bound to be jealousy and competition for attention. You need to give the 3 year old time with you w/o the pup. The more attention you give the pup, the more stressed and depressed the older dog will become. Don't make the older dog share her dishes, her bed, her favorite chair.... you must respect her pack seniority. Don't give the pup attention in her presence.. Feed the 2 dogs in different rooms- and make sure they have their own dishes- Feed at the same time morning and nite every day- put her food down for 10 minutes. If she doesn't eat it, pick it up and don't give her anything else until her next scheduled meal. She'll get hungry and eat. It's very important that you respect their "pack-order". The dogs will tell you who is the 'pack-leader' and who is lower in the 'pecking order'. If you keep swooning over the puppy, you are challenging their natural pack order and it will cause them to compete with each other - in that case i would totally expect the 3 year old to attack the pup. it would be natural dog behavior.
In the case of the dog that got relocated from a house/yard to an apartment- this has completely upset his world. He needs lots of extra attention- lots of exercise. This is not the kind of dog that will ever be content being cooped up. Same scenario with the feeding- set am/pm feeding times. Leave the bowl down for 10 minutes- then pick it up and don't give him anything else til the next regular feeding time. He'll get hungry and eat. Stay with his regular food now, during this stressful time. The biggest issue here will be giving him enuff exercise.

My sister has a huge lab male, with the same problem. He suddenly stopped eating, and he usually eats alot. The problem. Their other dog, a female, is in heat. I think he is just "in love", and wanting that and not his food for now. Could that be your dogs problem? Either jealous, or in love.
I own 5 chihuahuas, all fixed, thank goodness! (no problems ever with their eating.).

I don't know much about Chihuahuas, but I'm having the same problem with my dog right now! She is a mixed breed (part Chow Chow, Shepherd and maybe Lab?) and is about 2 years old now. We recently moved from a house with a big fenced in backyard to an apartment. She was eating Ol' Roy Kibbles & Bits at the house and when we first moved in here. My husband went to the store instead of me and bought her a generic food from the grocery store instead of going to Wally for Ol' Roy. She refused to eat! He went back to the grocery store and got REAL Kibbles and bits...she still wouldn't eat. Finally, he went to Wally and got Ol' Roy and now she won't eat that either!
I can't figure out what's wrong with her so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what advice you get.

Sometimes my chi stops eating for no apparent reason. When that happens I give her abt a teaspoon of PeptoBismol. In just a little bit she's eating again. I frequently but not always hear her tummy "growling" when this happens, so I suspect gas or something stops her from eating. Hope this helps!

hi, I used to raise chihuahuas, they are something else, they are very temperamental dogs, they through fits and very jealous of there owners, the chihuahua you have probably is jealous of the small one if u just got her, the chihuahua is wanting more attention. I have one now and she still is jealous of my cat, mine is 11 years old.and another thing u don't need to be feeding her off of the table, thats not good for the chihuahua, but I know the temptations,
let her have the kibbles it's better than nuttin, and when she sees yall don't care that she gets it , she will gradually come around, well I hope this helps a little if she doesn't come around before long maybe she needs to see a vet.they are like kids, they want the attention , only them.if u need to discuss more about your Chihuahua my s/n is joanne54 AT alltel.com
