Mower With a Briggs & Stratton Engine Won't Start

I have a Briggs and Stratton motor on my riding lawn mower that will not spark. Thought it might be the magneto and replaced it. No joy. How do I know I am not getting a spark? I pulled the plug wire and turned over the engine and put the wire next to the block hoping to see a spark, but I did not. Is there anything else to check to see if a spark is there?

Well, got it to start. Put a new plug and new fuel filter. Charged the battery and changed the bolt on the negative terminal because it looked like it wasn't making good contact. I know I have gas flow to the carb for sure. It will start but won't stay running for longer than a few seconds. It is being starved for gas. It will run when I spray starting fluid down the carb until the fluid runs out.

Could it be the solenoid? I took it out and it is a little corroded but still plunges albeit slowly. Don't know what else to check. It is a Murray lawn mower with a t 13.5 B&S motor. Is there something I am overlooking?

I know this sounds silly, but did you replace your spark plug with a new one? Might be worth a try.

What is the make and model of your riding mower? I have access to several manuals and have worked on many riding mowers.
