Replacing a Bathtub Drain Cover

I am replacing my Bathtub drain cover and basket and the replacement I purchased will not fit. I asked the peple at Menard's, where I bought it, and they said there is only one size of drain. This house was built in 1983. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
David

All bath drains come with a brass converter that you just unscrew to reveal a smaller one.
