We are planning on either using mineral spirits to thin out an oil based paint, or using a thinned out primer. Neither of these should be affected by humidity (even though we have a swamp cooler (evaporative cooling). Also, the white wash would be for the top half of the wall. We are going to be staining/painting with a semi-transparent tint the bottom half a greenish color, as we want to really lighten up the room. So, as long as we stick to the oil-based, we should be okay?

You can paint paneling if it is sanded lightly and evenly with a fine grit sandpaper then cleaned and dried. We too have old paneling in our home

Don't know what happened to the post but here goes again. We rehabbed a house that had laminate paneling and nothing would stick to it. We finally just cleaned it and buffed it a little and it looked fine. White wash is messy. Unless you pretreat with sealer and finish with several more coats of sealer that stuff comes off on everything and runs when it's humid. It works best on unpainted wood and from my experience with laminate I'm sure it won't work. Hope you'll be happy in your new home!
