Put a few drops of apple cider vinagar in the pets drinking water. Experiment with amount of drops. After a few days Mosquitos will avoid your pet.

We live in the northwest were we constantly deal with mosquitoes. We have found Cedar-Al. There is a shampoo and spray. We use the spray when we are leaving the dogs and it may get dark. We have boxers, they don't have very thick furr. Ceadar-Al is all natural and nontoxic and bio-geratable. It is actually made from fallen cedars in the northwest. When you spray them or wash them it helps from invasion of fleas, tics, mosqu, bees, ants, spiders, dust mites, and most other pests. It smells like cedar. Not so much when you wash, but when you spray. We spray everytime we will be out in the evening. Instead of 20+ bites, they may get 2. I swear by it.

I read on another site that someone used Bounce dryers sheets. I did this and it really WORKS! I rubbed my dog with a dryer sheet all over his body. And I rubbed one all over me and my clothes and the mosquitoes didn't bite either of us. They stayed away or either landed on us and then flew off. I tried taking my dog for a walk 10 minutes before I read this about the dryer sheets and we were bitten to pieces. This was a huge help to me and my dog that got to enjoy his daily half hour walk without being bitten once.

Be careful giving your dog brewers yeast if you have a larger dog, particularily barrel-chested. The yeast can create gas that may cause bloat.

In the DC area we have long very cold winters, but I keep my two (who are strictly indoor dogs) on heartworm preventative all year.
I can't risk them becoming infected. Just my 2 cents! Better safe than sorry :-)

OK, I called my vet and they said that there is a very low risk for my dog to get heartworm here (Laramie, WY) and that they have not had any cases yet this year. Also, since it will probably freeze here in a few weeks that will kill off most of the mosquitoes. AND, they will be having a heart worm clinic in May and I can go to that to get her screened and then on meds for next summer. Thank you all for the advice!

Use vinegar on the mosquito bites on you and the little dog,it stops the itching almost instantly.

I have the same problem here in Az.after a heavy rain and I use the Bounce fabric softener sheet to rub on my 2 dogs and myself.my husband is an avid fisherman and we've bought some of the most expensive 'dope" you can get on the market...he went fishing with a friend and didnt want to put the Mosquito repellant on himself because of the friends allergies,so he took the fabric softener sheet,rubbed his face and exposed areas of his arms and then on his clothes..he said about 4 dozen mosquitoes swarmed him but NONE lit on him.so the fabric softener sheet works on animal as well as human.I don't know if it works on flies or not but isn't it worth a try?

Please get your dog on heartworm meds. They are very deadly and very costly to treat.
I have had good success using Vick's Vaporub to keep mosquitoes and flies off my dog. Just rub it in your hands and all over the dog. It even keeps them off me when I'm working outside. I think I read that tip on ThriftyFun, as a matter of fact. Another tip that I read but have not tried is using a Bounce fabric softener sheet as a repellent.

Interesting thoughts, thank you. The vet has never said anything about giving her heartworm medication. Is that something they would tell me to give her if I needed to? I will ask her soon, she is in my book club!

First give your dog RX HEARTGARD from your vet, you don't want heartworms!! They will kill your dog !!
If the bugs are bad for my dog when we go to the park,I spray her bandana with AVON bug replent, then my self. NEVER spray this right on the dog!!!!
IT WORKS !!!! REmember the HEARTGARD!!!! :)

Please keep up heartworm meds as I read mosquito bites can cause heartworms and it seems
like a very dangerous thing.

Our vet told us to get " FLYS OFF " Spray at any pet store, works great.Got some for our doggies and they are not bothered anymore when they go outside. Just takes a light spray on their coats. Hope this helps . AND BE SURE TO GIVE HEARTWORM MED ALL YEAR, most certainly do not want your dog to get heartworm, it is not a good thing ....

Oh, yes as last lady said do give your dog heart worm meds even if my garlic and yeast works I still want to make sure my dogs are protected from heart worms.

I know most people think this is an old wives tale, but it works. I have always given my pets (dogs and cats) garlic and brewers yeast. It keeps away fleas, flies, ticks and mosquitoes. I use the 8 in 1 tabs by Excel as it also has omega 3 fatty acids for their skin and coat. You do have to give it year round so it stays in the system. Most vets (worked for vet a number of years and we kind of had little fights over this working or not) will tell you this does not work. However I have used it for well over 30 years raising toy poodles and labs never had a flea or insect problem in all that time. You can buy this at pet smart or go online to order. I am not sure what you can use on the dog, but I hope you are keeping up with the dogs heartworm medications. They get heartworm from mosquitoe bites. If you are not giving heartworm meds, you need to get the pooch checked for it at the vet before you can start it. Good luck!!

I would try that old stand-by SkinSoSoft from Avon. I don't know if they still make the powder but that's what I keep in the motorhome for all of us. If not, dilute the SSS with water and spray it on the dog . That should do the trick :D
