If it is your carpet. I'm with the person suggesting vinegar. I clean my carpet twice a year with just water and vinegar. I dilute the vinegar 1 cup to a large bucket of water. The smell leaves in about a day or two. But it works. It also cleans out the dog smell. Test it first on your carpet in a discrete location to make sure you don't ruin the color. I have a denim blue carpet and can do this without harm. I rent a steam cleaner from the grocery store. It works like a charm. I also put fans on the carpet and run them all night. Go lightly with water application, and vacuum the same area 3-4 times with the steam cleaner. NOT TOO MUCH WATER on the carpet.

Nothing will get rid of a smell quicker than lighting a wooden match and blowing it out. The smoke immediately gets rid of the odor. I keep a box handy in my laundry room by the kitty litter. My office used to keep them in the ladies bathroom because nothing worked quicker in the event of unpleasant smells. A little wood smell is far better than the pet odor. Then you can use any type of spray to add a little more flavor to the scent.

You might try vinegar to clean with. The vinegar smell only stays for a while and leaves things smelling pretty clean.

Not being sure where the odor is coming from limits ones ability to give advice but my first thought is clean, clean, clean. I'd start at the top and clean all drapes, curtains, or blinds. Then I'd vac., wash, air out all furniture and bedding. While that was being done I'd work on the floors. If it's "mopable" I'd use something like PineSol (my mother's favorite) or vinegar. If it's carpet you'll have to shampoo with some sort of carpet shampoo. It goes without saying that you should remove or clean the dogs bedding if he still lives there. Since it's summer you can air out the house and turn fans on to really blow it out good. We're selling our house now and I use those elec. candle warmers to keep a good smell going but it must be clean first or I would think that would really be disgusting.
