I also love the Oh My Chai but find it way too expensive. I just tried Bigelow's Vanilla Chai tea bags, and I think they taste almost exactly like Oh My Chai. But you have to add your own sugar (a lot) and milk. It's not quite as creamy, but the taste is amazingly similar.

I can't believe I just read my own story. I had Oh my Chai too at a similar party and I am having such a hard time finding it in our local stores and it is expensive. Great recipe! I'll be at the store in the am to buy the ingredients. I'm addicted>

I use this same recipe EXCEPT I substitute Splenda for the sugar and it is simply awesome! I'll never buy the stuff pre-made again and in fact, plan to make some as gifts for Christmas this year along with pretty tea cups and saucers.

To "Debbie 52", Re: What is Chai Tea? As I understand it, "Chai" is a Chinese word that means "tea". So if you order "Chai Tea" and it tastes like "Tea Tea", don't be surprised. Seriously though, it looks to me like so many liberties have been taken with the term it can cover just about anything. At the coffee shop where I work we get it in liquid form in both green and black.. The liquid is mixed 50/50 with milk and either iced or steamed like a latte.

I've found many recipes for the stuff online, so try to identify the flavors in your mix as much as possible and find a recipe that dupes them as best you can. Then just tweak the ingredients a bit at a time until you find a flavor you enjoy.

NATURAL CHAI TEA RECIPE

If you're like me & would rather not use fake creamers & artificial ingredients, this may be the chai for you, it's easy to make & I've been drinking it for years. I took the ingredient list from the back if the Chai mix they sell at my local Indian spice store & made their recipe to my liking. Everyone who has tried it just loves it.

* I get my spices in large bottles on sale at Wallgreens or the dollar store & make up the chai spice mix in bulk:

2 or 3 parts cinnamon
1 part cloves
1/2 part cardamom
1/4 part ginger
1/16 part black pepper

* (the pepper is for zest, this is what the Indian spice mix has in it) *optional

* Put all spices in a glass jar with lid & shake up & store in a dark cool place.

***** TO MAKE CHAI: *****

---> In a mug add hot water & 2 regular tea bags, but use half the hot water (to leave room for milk) in the mug.

---> Add about half a teaspoon or more (to taste) of the spice mix & stir.
After 3 or 4 minutes remove the tea bags then:

---> Pour in milk to the top of mug (of course whole milk works best, but 2% is also okay)

* I like my chai very hot, so I then heat mine up a bit in the microwave.

*** FOR ICE COLD CHAI: Fill up a glass with ice cubes & half milk, then add the hot tea with spices & stir.
(it's best if you pour the hot chai mix through a strainer so you don't have spices at the bottom of your glass)

Hi, Kim....I agree with you about that Chai Tea Tastefully Simple has....I also love their beer bread and their outstanding Vidalia Onion salad dressing....but they are expensive.

I have had weight loss surgery and have to watch the sugar I take in - so it is always a battle to find something that is reasonable in price but still tastes good. On one of the websites I go to has lots of different chai teas - spiced, vanilla, raspberry, chocolate, green tea, spiced apple, Decaf Spiced, no sugar added Vanilla and the one I like - Low Carb Spiced Chai. You can buy individual packets of 5 to try and I think they also have large containers. It really is delicious. Go to BigTrain.com - they also have other products and virtually everything I've gotten from this company is really delicious. It is still a little pricey, but not as high as Tastefully simple. Enjoy!!

It is a spiced tea. I really dont want to go and make that whole recipe and then not like it.. although I honestly do really appreciate the recipe. I was actually looking for a recipe that someone knows it tastes exactly like the Oh My Chai. I have tried others that were OK tasting, but didnt have the same taste as Oh My Chai. Yes I know I am picky lol, but its just the taste that I liked. :)

I also first tasted chai tea at a tastefully simple party, and loved it. I now purchase mine at Sams club. the name of the chai tea they sell is Mystic Chai, and it is delicious ! it is VERY close to the tastefully simple brand, at a much lower cost. I even have my husband hooked on it now. Try it, I don't think you will be disappointed.

What exactly is Chai tea? Seems I had a sample one day at Sam's Club and noticed they had a huge can of mix. If what I sampled was Chai, it was pretty good.

I use splenda instead of sugar. It costs a lot more but I love to relax with my Chai tea. I also use low fat version of everything.

I love chai as well, and was discouraged by the price of the powders. But then I discovered Good Earth Vanilla Spice Chai teabags ... they are great. I get the best results by putting the teabag in the "filter" part of my coffeepot and running thru about 2 cups of water. Presto! Chai! Then add sweetener and cream to taste. Much cheaper than the powder!

First, here is a recipe I have used many times, and absolutely LOVE; don't skip any steps, or ingredients:

Chai tea mix

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1 cup French vanilla flavored powdered non-dairy creamer
2 1/2 cups white sugar
1 1/2 cups unsweetened instant tea
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cardamom

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large bowl, combine milk powder, non-dairy creamer, vanilla flavored creamer, sugar and instant tea. Stir in ginger, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. In a blender or food processor, blend 1 cup at a time, until mixture is the consistency of fine powder.
2. To serve: Stir 2 heaping tablespoons Chai tea mixture into a mug of hot water.

(I buy my cardamom at a bulk foods store, as it is too pricey in the grocery store--but essential to this mix.)

That batch will last you a LONG time.

However, as you can see, the recipe has a lot of sugar. (They all do, unfortunately.)

Something I enjoy as an alternative, with NO guilt, is the Celestial Seasons "India Spice" Chai Tea bags, with sugar free french vanilla non-dairy creamer powder. It really is a fair substitute, letting me save the more caloric (but yummy) chai mix for special occasions.
