6th Grade Graduation Dinner
I'm in charge of decorations for my daughter's 6th grade graduation dinner. It will be held in the school cafeteria. Does anyone have ideas on inexpensive but nice decorating ideas (table decorations, something for the entrance)?

Purchase a calendar at a discount store, cut it apart and tape the pictures to the tops of the tables coverings. Maybe a folk art type calendar with school/family theme or match your color palate. Then sprinkle the table with some small candies. I did this recently for a family party. The calendar cost $1, and the bags of candy $4. It looked very cute.

A simple idea for the entrance is a balloon arch. Your daughter's school probably has a helium tank, and if not most businesses that rent tanks will lend them to schools free of charge. Purchase balloons in school colors. Thread a needle with fishing line or heavy twine (measured to the dimensions of the doorway or entrance). As you blow up the balloons with helium and tie them off "sew" them together thru the "tail" of the balloons. When the string or line is completely full of balloons, fix each end to one side of the doorway. Let the helium do the arch work for you! It will look great!

Judy's suggestion made me think of something my class made in school. We took pipe cleaners & bent in shape of flower petals. Then took vibrant colored fabric (can use scraps), cut in the same petal shapes as the pipe cleaners & glued the fabric petals to the pipe cleaners (can mix & match or have the same fabric for the whole flower). Arrange 5 or 6 complete flowers in a small vase, after making stems with more pipe cleaners. But to keep the "flowers" in place, we used a ball of green modelling clay in the neck of the vase, then put the "flowers thru it. When the clay dried the "flowers" stayed in place. More compliments were made over our flower vases!

When I was younger, we use to make carnations out of colored tissue paper and pipe cleaners and put them in jars tied with ribbons. Fold the tissue paper like a fan and then fold a pipe cleaner around the middle leaving a long piece that will be the stem, then carefully pull apart the edges of the tissue paper fluffing it up as you go. Using jars would be the most inexpensive but you may be able to find small vases at dollar stores or yardsales. Some mothers may even be willing to donate vases that they have that they are not using.
