Cross Stitch Poem for a Baby Shower Gift
Sound familiar to anyone? As I've been asked to attend a baby shower soon, I would like to be able to cross-stitch it as a gift. I hope someone may remember where I might be able to find this sweet verse.

We had this poem on the wall of the Maternity Ward!
I hope my child looks back on today
and remembers a Mum who had time to play
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up when we are not looking
Cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
Cos babies grow fast, we learn to our sorrow
So settle down cobwebs, dust go to sleep
I'm cuddling my baby, and babies don't keep xx

This one is as old as the hills (and me)! It is the last refrain from "Song for a 5th Child" by Ruth Hamilton.
"Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth, Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew

The title of the poem is "Song for a Fifth Child" by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton. It was published in The Ladies' Home Journal in 1938. It is a great reminder of priorities in mothering!

My mother had this on my dinning room wall in Nova Scotia back in 1980. I just quoted it on facebook for my aunt who was cleaning. WOW. Has anyone got more history on this poem?

The version I know goes like this:
