Watering Tomato Plants Underground

Tomatoes... our picky plants! Never water from the top. You know those big recyclable 4 gallon milk containers? As you plant each tomato plant, dig a deep hole beside it. Punch small holes in the milk container after it is filled with water. A wee bit of liquid fertilizer early in the season is a great addition. Remove lid to water plants, fill when needed and cap again, No overhead watering!

You said 4 gallon milk containers...I'm not familier with those...did you mean 1 gallon milk containers..please clarify...thanks jim g.

Ok dont know why nobody I have found has ever though of this. I have a spigot outside that the hose is connected to. I have my potted tomato plant right under the spigot with a hose connected to it. I crack the spigot juuust enough to get a well timed drip going and allow it to feed the soil. We will see if this work. Pleanty of the 1/2 day of sun to get the timing just right on that as well.

Bev this is a neat idea. Think I'll give it a try. Nothing like home grown tomato sandwiches. Yum Yum.
