Blooming Glads

My glads have blooms and are drying out, will they continue to bloom until the fall, or should they be dug up now, or should I just cut the bloom at this time?

Hi Gwen,

Gladiolus generally blooms mid to late summer as far as I know, but I think there are a few different varieties that bloom early or later. It also depends on when you planted them too. I live in south Miss. zone 8b and the new ones that I planted in early May are up and should be right on time with their blooms. With new plantings you can also space them a few weeks apart to extend the bloom time. Anyway, we're pretty lucky to have a long growing season down south, and in our zones you do not have to dig up most bulbs, just make sure that they are properly mulched over winter.

I also live in LA. (DeRidder) I planted my glads 3 years ago. I have never dug up the bulbs. Each year they show back up and bloom. Mine are blue and just gorgeous. In fact they are blooming right now.

Wait until the foliage is completely dead before digging up the bulbs.
