Garden Insects: Aphids
IdentificationAlso referred to as plant lice, aphids are 1/32 to 1/8 inch long, pear-shaped sucking insects. They are soft-bodied and may or may not have wings. Aphids come in black, green, pink, red, gray and yellow, and some have a wooly, white coating. You can usually find them in clusters on the undersides of young leaves and along tender shoots. They are often in the company of ants, because aphids secrete a sticky substance called honeydew, which ants feed on. Sooty mold also commonly grows on honeydew. Winged forms and male aphids generally appear in the fall. Aphids are found throughout the U.S and Canada.Favorite PlantsAphids attack small fruits, vegetables, flowers and fruit trees. Some of their favorites include cabbage, celery, cucumbers, greens, melons, potatoes, tomatoes and roses.DamageAphids stunt and distort leaves, buds and flowers by piercing plant tissues and sucking out valuable sap. Feeding can also spread viral diseases.Organic Methods of Control:Cultural or Mechanical

Feedback About This Post:RE: Garden Insects: AphidsI have a young apple seed that just sprouted this year but a bunch of plants that my mom just ordered were covered in aphids. I tried lady bugs but at the time they flew off. I have resorted to using a tooth pick to dislodge them from the infant tree and then individually killing the aphids but as you may know this feels like am trying to swat a fly with a sledgehammer, possible to do but it take lots of effort and is for the most part futile, is there a more effective way. (I don't want to be the cause for an aphid invasion of the house when I bring the small tree in for the winter (around 8 cm tall at the moment) If there are aphid eggs in the pot. iS there a better way.
