Thanks to everyone for the tips on this problem. I began suffering - intermittent tickling in outer shell of ear. About a year ago, when I began using a headset with the TV and computer. Thought at first that it might be dust mites from the headset that had been in storage for years. But I now find that it is relieved by rubbing the roof of my mouth with my tongue.

The itching begins when I have had the headsets on for a while causing my ears to heat up. So I suspect that moisture in the ear "fluid in the ear" is the cause. Thanks again for all your comments.

Yes I have had the same thing inside my outer ear canal for 6 months it drives me insane my ent said I had patchus euchation tube disorder and it air I feel and there is nothing I can do about it. Not sure I believe that.

Okay, I went and had my nose pads adjusted and the pressure on side of the nose was relieved but ear problem still remained. I decided to continue with the EarClear drops and when I have a shower I let the water run inside the ear canal and then tilt head to let the water drain. There is an improvement while the ear canal is wet but an hour or so later, tickling sensation recurs. I know it's a no-no but I went hunting for a bobby pin because I feel that it's a bit of skin. Couldn't find a bobby pin and so I took the cotton off a cotton bud and carefully inserted that to try and scrape as far as I could. A little flake of skin of about 2mm x 1mm came out. A few hours have gone by and the sensation is either gone or I've pushed the offending obstacle off the nerve. Next week will go back to the doctor to get a second opinion if it returns.

I started to experience this in my left ear since last week after I had new silicone pads replaced on my spectacles. The sight out of my left eye felt "odd", sort of blurry sharp but I put it down to getting used to the newer pads as the old ones were well worn. What has this got to do with my ear? Well, by evening of that day I started to feel this tickling sensation in my ear. I normally have my ears syringed yearly and figured it was due. I bought ear oil first and then four days later went to my doctor. She didn't see much wax and the offending ear had less wax than the other however she proceeded to syringe my ears. Not much came out. I felt good but after about an hour or so (probably after my ears had dried) the sensation came back. I have a feeling it is the new pads as there is a bit of redness on the left side of my nose when I remove my glasses. May have to go back to the optometrist to have the nose pad adjusted slightly. Will advise what happens.

A friend of mine had this years ago. She ended up going to a dr who isolated a nerve that was causing the trouble, and they used a laser to do surgery and cut that nerve. She has had no trouble since.

Okay, so I've had this same problem for going on 25 years now (!)...been to doctors, etc., and have nearly lost my mind over it. I won't get into just how I found a solution, but the upshot is that when I learned how much I was clenching my jaw and stopped, in addition to stopping chewing gum, it went away. immediately! Talk about feeling like I'd experienced a miracle! Anyway, if it ever does begin again (which it does on occasion), I instantly know I'm clenching my jaw, so I stop and it goes away. I suspect there is a nerve that is 'triggered' by the clenching.

I had to come and post this because truly, it's saved my sanity. Hopefully it will help someone else!

Hi once again. I'm sorry to say there doesn't seem any answers to this problem, I have been free from it for almost 10 months and out of the blue I have just started to feel this again very slightly. My only answer is to massage behind the ear gently and also move the whole ear around in a gentle movement this I feel may release a nerve or pressure within the ear, also try relaxing your jaw as clenching your teeth may cause this sensation who knows? Good Luck

I really thought I was the only one. I've had this for ages, also been given meds, nothing relieves it.
I'm in South Africa, cape town, and it gets worse at night. Anyone with a solution?

The sensation feels like a small fine hair tickling my ear drum.
I have been experiencing the tickling sensation as long as I can remember. I get relief by plunging my ear canal with my finger tip or cupping my palm over my outer ear and plunging it. Other than that, I relieve it by inserting a q-tip all the way into my ear to the point of the sensation.

I have been told by a doctor that my eardrums appeared to be slightly calloused which is usually caused by spending a lot of time in the water, which I don't. But, it makes me wonder if the calloused drum and the sensation are related.

It must of put your mind at rest to have seen a specialist about this most annoying problem, however that doesn't alter the fact this tickling sensation really does drive one crazy as there doesn't seem to be an end to it, I suffered with this for around eight months, and it just gradually disappeared it got less and less with a gentle massage each day

OMG, I thought I was the only one! I've had this for a few months now. It's just what you all describe. I went to an ENT and he had no idea, so I don't think it's a fluid thing. I will say that the pressing my tongue to roof of mouth offers some relief. I think it's similar to an eye twitch, brought on by stress, even if you don't think you're stressed.

I've tried dropped, trimming ear hair, even ice to numb it. The ENT gave me an epilepsy drug, mild dose, in the hopes of knocking out the nerve flutter. Tongue to mouth seems to be the ticket!

I wear a night guard (bite plate) because I grind my teeth in my sleep. When nothing worked to stop the maddening itching in and around my right ear, my wife suggested that I try wearing the night guard during the day. I was skeptical, because my TMJ problem had caused pain in the jaw and temple areas, but no itching sensation. It worked! I asked the ENT specialist who had examined my ear (and found nothing), and he said that TMJ can cause some strange symptoms. He had not heard about itching before, but he said TMJ was probably the cause.

I still haven't found a cause for this most annoying problem, but I was wondering if this could be a nerve that's become aggravated, maybe from the neck. other wise could it be clenching teeth to tight. I have racked my brain to come up with a reason behind this irritating problem as G.P doesn't have answer maybe it's something to do with medication

I have been having this tickling sensation in my left ear for the last 4-5 years. It started out to be just a minor issue, however, it is now occurring all the time and it is driving me crazy. The sensation starts deep inside and it extends to the outside of the ear. I have been to my Doctor and 3 specialists in Neurology and Ear Nose and Troat. They all stated that my ear looks normal and have no idea what is going on and have no solution to the problem. They have given me 3 different types of drops and nothing works. I even had a scan of the left side of my head and everything is normal.

When the tickling gets really bad I stick an ear plug in as far as it can go which allows the tickling to be a little less irritating; however, when I have the plug in and the tickling occurs, I can hear a gurgling sound.

I will also utilize a Q-Tip by sticking it in and touching certain spots; again, a temporary fix.

There has got to be a solution to this problem.

thank you for the feed back re fluid inside my ear, is this fact and wouldnt I actually feel fluid in my ear, or is it the balance fluid, can you be more specific this is very interesting , as its really very annoying and if I do go back to G.P I could make this suggestion about it being fluid. thank you so much for responding

Hi i still have this sensation within the shell part of my ear its almost five monthes now I was wondering if is related to a nerve in the neck it is so annoying I cant help but go through various thought processes trying to eliminate the could be scenario. I see someone has had a return of this happening after using ear plugs, so may be it is nerve related ?

Someone suggested it could be a food intolerance which I doubted, but as food does enter the blood stream I suppose it could have some effect, I have been eating a low fat cheese quite a bit after having cheese free years because of high cholesterol, who knows , I wonder if any of you have high cholesterol maybe we could piece something together if so.

I have had this annoying sensation a few times these past 2 years, lasting weeks, sometimes months, with each episode. It can drive you NUTS. I was "tickle-free" for months recently and then last week it started again. The night before, I had put silicone earplugs in my ears because of my husband's snoring and I can't help but think that this may be the cause otherwise it's too much of a coincidence! Right now, I'm waiting until the tickling goes away again, and I'll experiment one more time to see if the silicone earplugs cause it. I may be totally off mark but it's worth sharing, just in case all of you are earplug users.

You have described this very well, I have had this for five months now, and seen my G.P four times they dont have any advice or answer for it. so I suppose your theory could be right it could be stres related , as i have this in abundance, however it dosent alter the fact, its there and very annoying,

I know exactly what you're going through. I've been feeling the same thing for the past two months now and it's very annoying. Can't even describe it. Feels like somebody is tickling my ear with a feather and feeling all goose bumps and it comes in waves all day long. How does one go to a doctor with this complaint? I think it might be stress. Wish I knew for sure.

have this sensation in my ear, Dr said ear looked fine, and didnt have an answer for this, BUT it is still driving me nuts
TRied to pressing tongue behhind back teeth, works for a few minuets, but then it comes back again

I've had the tickling for a few months. I just started looking online for information. On one site someone suggested that she gets relief by pushing her tongue on the roof of her mouth just behind her front teeth. I tried it and it works!

My son had a small 1/2 hair in his ear from a hair cut. He complained for weeks about this a strange noise and a tickling. The Dr suggested flushing the ear out with water in a needless syringe and after several squirts out came a tiny hair. Feeling is gone.

Thanks for the tip on sensation in ear I did got my daughter to look in my ear but she couldn't see anything such as a fine hair, thats not to say there isn't one . I'm getting used to feeling it now, not that I'm content to have this happen. I'm going back to g.p soon so will post my results on this page

First off, you're not crazy and you're not the only one experiencing this "deep ear itch." I have the same problem. Like you, I got prescribed the ear drops and cortisone. The ear drops seemed to help for a little while, but when they ran out, I was back at square one. The cortisone was just too messy - yuck! Who wants a glob of goop in their ear?
I'm already visually impaired, so don't want to endanger my hearing by digging deep enough to scratch where it *really* itches. My solution might not help you, but maybe you'll find it worth a try.
If you use dandruff shampoo, try this the next time you wash your hair: get your hair soapy with the dandruff shampoo and then rub it into your ears, too. When you rinse, be sure to let the water run into your ears. Even if the itch is on the shell of your ear, this could help. I hope it does.

Ok, I refuse to feel wierd about saying this one!
Is it an INVISI-HAIR? One of those ultra pale, ultra thin hairs people sprout in weird places.
LOL Mine was on my hand and I swear I lived with a ghost for a two week period, cause it felt like someone touching the back of my hand.
I also produced one close to the side of my nose, and it took me a month to see IT.
Sit in the sunshine and use a good magnifier mirror, or a good friends younger eyesight.
