Extending the Life of Your Washing Machine

To extend the life of your washing machine and have less maintenance on it, set the machine to the longest and hottest wash cycle. Do not add any clothes or detergent. Instead, pour an entire gallon of white vinegar into the tub at the beginning and allow the machine to go through its entire cycle. If you do this routinely, you will extend the life of your washing machine because vinegar removes scum and hard-water buildup.

Try using the bicarb/vinegar solution. This can help to prevent the machine waste pipes clogging up.

I was told that by an appliance repairman that vinegar and bleach will dry out seals in the washer! If you don't want to use vinegar, ammonia or bleach (be very careful not to mix them) there is a cleaner called purewasher that is only sold at smellywasher.com / This cleaner will clean inside your washer and remove mildew or musty smell from towels and clothes. All you'll need is one tablespoon. There is a money back guarantee on it, too!

GlowGirl -- nope the smell of vinegar will be gone as soon as it dries! Many here love vinegar for it's cleaning properties and for me the only downside is that my house smells like pickles as I'm cleaning, but it's worth it to not have to use harsh, dangerous chemicals around my kids!

Okay--it sounds like a great tip, but I'm wondering if the vinegar smell stays? Do you have to do another cycle with no clothes to get rid of the smell?

Thanks!

RE: Extending the Life of Your Washing Machine

I have heard this tip previously but have never used it. I will have to put it on my to-do list for tomorrow. I was wondering if a cycle through the dishwasher using vinegar only would clean it as well??? I get so many good ideas from this site. Thanks.

Editor's Note: I'm sure it would help.

So, if vinegar is used in every rinse cycle as part of a home-made fabric sofenter, would it have the same result? Esp. if you also use home-made, non-sudsing soap?
