Caring For Cut Flowers

Did you get some cut flowers? Here's a little prep work you can do to make them last longer. Using pruning sheers, make a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem. Do this under running water. Don't use scissors for this, they will crush the stems and make it harder for them them to absorb water. Strip away all leaves that will be below the water line of the vase. Those leaves will rot more quickly if you don't remove them. Make sure to clean out the vase before putting the new flowers in. Change the water once a day add 2 tablespoons of sugar to act as preservatives for your flowers.

Just a quick tip when arranging your flowers. If you have a clear vase, you can use clear cellophane scrunched up to help the stems to sit exactly where you want.

It also helps if the stems are too short for the vase you want to use. You can use any colour if you use an opaque vase, or if you wanted to give the clear vase an interesting &/or co-ordinated look for the room. The paper that the flowers are wrapped in will often be the type that can be 'scrunched' and also co-ordinates well with the flowers.

Cutting the stems under the water & doing it daily, really makes a huge difference, as it stops the air from forming air bubbles in the stem which will stop the water from moving up the stems, & this is why it extends the life of your fresh flowers.

If you are given a special single flower, or want them to last for something special a little later than they would normally last, & your flowers will fit into the refrigerator, put them in the 'fridge at night & they will last a whole heap longer. If you move them into a cool part of the house before going to bed at night during the winter months, they will also last longer. After all, it's the heat that causes flowers to be replenished more often during summer.

i was a florist and we even used a tsp or two of hydrogen peroxide give a fresh cut every day or other day and buy the buds closed up they last longer i always used my floral knife or any sharp knife to cut at an angle the way we do to fresh cut flower in the shop prunners and scissors are too hard and they dont absorb water as well

a drop of bleach will keep bacteria out and the flowers will last a long time---do cut the ends of the stems off before putting them in the vase.
