Sunscreen Stains on Clothing

Can someone please help me with orange sunscreen stains on clothing? I'm finding the stains after washing. They don't appear until the clothing has been washed. I called Coppertone and they said it's the Avobenzone reacting with iron levels in our water. I don't understand why this hasn't been a problem in the past.

I've tried Oxyclean, Biz and now I'm going to try The Works like someone suggested. I'm ruining clothing left and right. The Blue Lizard Sensitive stuff works but my son breaks out from it so he can't use it. Plus it's a pain to apply and EVERYTHING sticks to it. I did just order some Trigger Spray Coppertone, the Coppertone people said it's one that doesn't have the Avobenzone. Anyone else having this issue this year and not in the past?

Everyone, please try a product named GOOP. It can be found in the automotive section of most discount stores. It is basically a hand cleaner, but works miracles on fabric stains. It is a white cream. Rub it in covering the entire stain and let it sit for at least an hour, then wash the item the regular way. My golf shirts come out stain free. This is not a joke and I am not associated with the product in any way.

Saminbaba - what type of chelating cleanser did you use - is there a name brand you can give? How do we know what one is?

To all: I just contacted Nike about this problem and they claim not to have had complaints before! They were no help. I've been using sunscreen religiously for many, many years and this problem is definitely worse. It is some ingredient in the sunscreen that is different than it used to be.

p.s. What kind of The Works? They make many different cleaners of different composition.

RE: Sunscreen Stains on Clothing

DO NOT use bleach or any Oxy type of cleaner - oxidation is what caused the stains to begin with. Bleach, peroxide or "Oxy" will cause the stains to get worse.

Use lemon juice, vinegar, CLR or acid-based (chelating) cleaner. The sunscreen stains will disappear before your eyes.

I sing praises to the internet and this website. Just got back from vacation and hot weather. Wore a high spf sunscreen (checked it and it has avobenzone in it). Needless to say, my white clothes got the big orange blotches when I washed them. I was so dismayed and tried iron out, stain remover, etc. etc. I suspected sunscreen so did a search which lead me to this site. One feed back suggested Bar Keepers Friend, which I had on hand. Tried it and it worked. Just sprinkled it on the stains and they disappered in seconds. There is a solution! Don't discard those clothes you might think are ruined.

Thanks for the tip to use TheWorks on sunscreen stain - my daughter's white clothes were ruined - I tried many different solutions including oxalic acid which partially removed the stains. TheWorks returned the clothing to better than new! This problem only occurs when I wash with well water which is very high in iron.

RE: Sunscreen Stains on Clothing

I have tried without success to find out what ingredient in sunscreen is responsible for the stain. I would like to just avoid it as I too have many pieces of stained clothing. I contacted Aveeno and Neutragena and both customer service reps that I spoke with said neither had reports or complaints of staining from their products. I know it had to be one or the other as that is all I used last month. One did offer a refund for any dry cleaning expense incurred if I wanted to have them try to remove the stain. The other company offered me a $10.00 coupon for a lotion product they had that was stain free. Wonder why they developed a stain free product if they didn't have complaints about staining from their other products.? I would appreciate hearing if anyone knows the answer about what the culprit might be. Thanks!

I am also having sunscreen stains on my clothing which appear mostly after washing. Do your stains appear with spray sunscreen only, or with lotion, also? Have you found anything that takes the stains out or reduces them? I have thrown out full loads of whites four times, after vacations using sunscreen continually throughout. I have city water and noticed the problem over the last two years or so only.

Looking for the same answer as Emily about exploding sunscreen on clothes! My daughter sauced her pants in sunscreen when she squeezed the bottle all over her, now I can't get it out! Any suggestions? I have well water and have had the stains, but I can't even get the white sunblock part to come out!

RE: Sunscreen Stains on Clothing

I have used La Roche-Posay, Anthelios XL to UVA/UVB sun block and emailed the company regarding the stain issue with no positive results. I have soft water, used the oxy pre-wash product do not use the dryer and have decided to wear dark clothing only, having thrown away about 15 light colored shirts/blouses. Great..........my face is covered; however, my clothes are a loss!
Thank you everyone for your suggestions, I shall keep trying.

I have had the same problem with staining when using Neutrogena Ultra Sheer. I have found that is you spray KABOOM for laundry on it it removes the stain. It is hard to find ( I got mine off of the Shopping channel I think it is made by the same company as Oxyclean).
