Supplies
- Baby Food Jar (washed and cleaned with alcohol)
- 8 inch decorative beads (the ones sewn onto cloth tape)
- Glass Etching Cream
- Antiquing Gel
- Acrylic Paint - brown and tan
- Clear Satin Spray Paint (I like Kilz because it doesn't yellow)
- Small piece of felt
- Small piece of contact paper
- Craft Glue
- Tea Lite (the battery powered ones are great)
Instructions
Brush etching cream on jar. No need to do the rim or the bottom. Let sit overnight. Be sure to place the jar on a thick rag or towel to protect your work surface. Doing more than one at a time makes it more worthwhile. Wash dried cream off with soap and warm water. If not totally etched, reapply cream and let sit overnight again.Cut a piece of contact paper to about the size of a half-dollar. Stick on side of jar. Make sure all edges are flat. This is going to be your little window for the light to shine through. Brush on brown paint. Let dry. Brush on crackle medium and let sit 5 minutes. Brush on Tan paint. Let dry. Brush on Antiquing gel and gently rub off excess. Let dry.
Remove the contact paper circle. Spray with clear spray paint. Let dry. Spray another coat and let dry. Cut a piece of felt to fit the bottom of the jar. Glue on. Glue beads around rim of jar overlapping at the end. Be sure to put glue on the end of the tape to keep it from raveling.
Put in your tea lite and watch it glow! You can see a battery powered lite in the jar on the left.
These can be done in other colors as well. Just be sure to put on several coats so the light doesn't shine through. I just like to make my glass look like ceramic. Make sure you spray the clear paint on at least two coats to protect the finish.

I've done this before at work with kids as young as 18 months. We've used them for gifts from the kids for the parents and such. One year, we just brushed Elmers glue on the jars & let the kids stick shaped confetti on the jars. Found out that when you use Elmer's glue on baby food jars, it does not dry clear, but gives the jar a frosted look! Really cool! They were fun for the kids & a big hit with the parents!

great idea. we also made candles in baby food jars, we grated old candles of different colors and layerd the colors in the jars. Then placed a wick(the ones with the wire so they slide into the wax curls) decorate the lid. the jars can be reused many times and you use up all you bits of old candles.
