I read a posting that said if you use reverse osmosis water you can avoid calcium deposits. We have used only reverse osmosis water and still have a problem with calcium deposits.

My mom's tried and true recipe.
Place several brown paper grocery bags on
the ironing board. Next heat iron, run iron over a block of plain wax/parfin then iron it off on
paper bag and your iron is clean.
You could try wax paper if you do not have
a block of clear wax.
This always work just be careful. I use this
method .

In the future, use only distilled or reverse osmosis water in your steam iron.
