How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

I would like to know how can I remove tape glue from my window? We taped my sliding glass door for Katrina and now I can't take it off. We used duct tape.

After Hurricane IKE we had a baby. 4 1/2 months later we got around to taking the baked on tape off. Used non-scented 7th generation window cleaner, a bad dvd to scrape it and a cloth to wipe it. Comes off fairly easily. Did 3 huge windows in 30 minutes.

I used engine degreaser and let it sit for about ten seconds and then scrubbed it with the hard side of a dish sponge and it worked like a charm.

I tried using nail polish remover,on a glass and it wasn't coming off. Then I used WD-40. Then I put some "goop" hand cleaner on it, to cut the grease. It came off easy as pie! Thanks for the info. about the WD-40!

Buy a decorators window scraper and you can just scrape the goo off and clean the window normally, gets rid of those spots of paint on the window too :)

If I use WD-40 on my windows to get the residue off, will I have to worry about it leaving a stain?

WD40 worked to get the tape off of the window and soften the tape residue - then I used goo off to get the residue off fairly easy.

Tried nail polish remover today on some tape residue left on car window for months. Came off easily. Just applied remover to a cotton pad, kept wiping it on the tape and used a scraper to get it off. Great tip!

I've just used WD40 on your advice. Worked a treat. Thank you all very much!

The nail polish remover (with acetone) got the job done, but it required A LOT of "elbow grease"(alternate scrubbing with a nail polish soaked paper towel and scraping with a credit card) . I actually think that scrubbing with an olive oil soaked paper towel worked a bit better: it removed the residue more quickly and with less scrubbing. Moreover, the olive oil worked wonders in getting the glue residue off of my hands!

Rub it hard with olive or canola oil works for me and easy!

Use WD40 - The grease in it will remove tape off anything hands down .I put up Christmas lights last year and used duct tape to hold the lights up - when I took them down I had a horrible mess - used WD40 came off without even scrubbing.

Eucalyptus oil and a credit card
just soak the oil on with a cotton ball and rub it in a bit, then scrape the residue off with the credit card
works like magic

To remove masking tape from windows, I tried Goo Gone, then nail polish remover with acetone. The nail polish remover worked much faster and easier. (However, the Goo Gone worked better to get the tape glue off of my fingers. Go figure...)

Tried the vinegar method. Worked like a charm. First I soaked the tape with a sponge full of vinegar, let it soaked, and then peeled off. There was some residue left. Further soaked with vinegar and scraped off effortlessly with plastic card.

JUST PLAIN OLD WINDEX WORKS--keep spraying it let it soak in behind the adhesive and start at the bottom, by the time you get to the top of the window, it just peels off!

After trying out everything in my apt, as a last resort, I used "Easy-off oven cleaner, fume free max". I sprayed a panel of window glass with Easy Off, then placed plastic wrap over it so it would stay moist. Waitied a couple hours, then went back and the tape almost fell off, just with the saran wrap, all it took was a few scrapes with a single edge razor to get a final clean up and follow up with windex for a sparkling clean window!! This method worked wonderfully!

I had some duct tape glue stains on a window that were very baked on. I dripped some 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol over the stain, let it soak, and then scraped it off with plastic card you would find in your wallet (like a credit card, but use something unimportant). It came off easily and its a cheap solution.

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

there is a great product (virtually inexpensive) called goo gone. Available in craft stores, I have even found it in the grocery store in the cleaning and soap aisle. Plain old rubbing alcohol works very well on glass as does vinegar

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

Tee,
I'm not sure if you're still looking for a solution to your problem, but if so, head to your local Home Depot. In their paint dep. they have an orange spray bottle of stuff (I think it's called "Goof Off") that will work absolute wonders. We moved in our home and the people prior to us had paint and sticky residue(I assume tape) from who knows how long ago, stuck on the windows. "Goof Off" took it all away with hardly any scrubbing; although you may need to use a razor blade, it will be with little effort. Good luck!

i use a straight edge razor. just press the razor along the problem and it should come right off. clean it with the alcohol or polish remover if needed.

One of the windows on my house, (exterior) has old, dried masking tape stuck to it from the previous owners who didn't remove it after painting the house.
The window frame is aluminum and I have tried everything to get this ugly stuff off. You would think that I could just peel if off after all this time but it doesn't come off.
Any suggestions?

Hi Bill,
Your best bet is rubbing alcohol. Put some in a spray bottle and it should take it off.

Non- acetone nail polish remover works also, we tried it after we put masking tape up on our bedroom window, and it works so well! We actually got that idea off of this website, try it, it works!

Acetone nail polish remover will work in an INSTANT! Don't use oil at all on your windows, it will not come off. And you're doing too much work cleaning, then cleaning the cleaner....

There is also a product called "TKO". It's liquid that smells like oranges. It takes off the stickiness left by tape, labels, etc. It also removes marker, stains, odors, etc. It's expensive - but it works good, and you only need a little.

Try antibacterial hand gel. I've tried it and it works like magic! Also, it doesn't make a mess. Very easy to wipe off.

I use peanut butter to remove any and all leftover adhesive. For extra tough stickiness, cover with peanut butter, leave on for a day or nite, rub off the next day.

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

Try using cooking oil. You will then need to clean the oil off with hot water, dawn dish liquid and vinegar. I had a mirror with stickers that had been there for years and this worked like a charm.

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

Spray it with WD-40 and let it sit a few minutes. Then use a scraper with a single edge razor blade to finish it. Any window cleaner will get the WD-40 off.
You can use WD-40 to clean most glue types off.

Post By Jessie (Guest Post)

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

Spray a bit of WD-40 on a paper towel and wipe over it or you can also use lighter fluid on a paper towel to take it off. You may have to let either one sit a few seconds then scrape it off with razor blade and it should come right off.

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

My sister in Kentucky always used isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle for cleaning residue from windows, sometimes mixed with 1/3vinegar and 1/3 water (or use vinegar only, or alcohol only in the spray bottle). I have cleaned windows with alcohol only, and you won't get a better shine with anything.

I LIVE IN MT DORA, FL--I HAD TO USE HAIR CONDITIONER (HAHAHA) FOR REAL!!!

THEN USED A WINDOW RAZOR BLADE---IT SOFTEN THE DRY TAPE---AND WITH THE TINTING WINDOWS--I HAD TO RUB A LITTLE MORE. (NO BLADE)

NO MORE HURRICANES!!!!

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

They make this stuff called "Goo-Gone" you can get at most Home stores. Spray some on pretty thick, let it sit, then scrape with a razor blade. This worked for me on a car seat that was in a hot car all the time and helped to get sticky labels off of it that had baked on. I also used it on the windows of my new house to get the label residue off of them.

RE: How Do You Clean Tape Residue Off Windows

Any ideas on how to get mailing tape residue off windows? As you know, Florida had 4 hurricanes this fall, many of us criss cross tape across window panes to keep window glass from flying if window is broken. Because this lasted for 6-7 weeks the sun has baked the tape onto windows, I can't get it off. Thanks for any help
