Daschund Losing HairLeAnne from Okahoma Feedback About This Post:RE: Daschund Losing HairMy dog, Wiley, is 4 years old and has been losing his hair over the past 2 years or so. He is almost completely bald! We were told by a vet that it was either allergies or a thyroid problem and how costly it would be to treat either. I stumbled upon this blog last weekend and decided to try and switch his dogfood from Beneful and Pedigree to Canidae Lamb and Rice Meal. It's been 9 days and I am seeing "peach fuzz" all over his back! I will update everyone on Wiley's progress. I hope this is the answer! Post by luvwiley RE: Daschund Losing HairMy 9 month old female spayed daschund is losing hair in all of the spots everyone mentions. I changed her diet - she is on wellness brand, all natural and holistic, she had a thyroid test that came back fine, the vet checked for mites and mange, neither were present and put her on melatonin 1-1(1/2) tablets per day. Nothing has helped so far, the vet said it could also be hormones after the spay or just the way she is going to look for the rest of her life? If anyone has any suggestions I'll try anything. For the person who tried the melatonin, how long before you saw some improvement? Thanks Post by hjpp21 RE: Daschund Losing HairMy short hair dachshund was losing his hair on his ears and belly. My vet said food allergies were the cause. I took him off all grain and it helped alot. I buy call of the wild food at pet smart. Last month the hair started coming off again and I was told by another dachsie owner that alot of them are also allergic to poultry! So no more duck knibble. Within 2 weeks he got his furry belly back. Post by rubyscooby RE: Daschund Losing HairFirst, I urge you to check for any fleas, mites, and the like that could be biting your dog. If nothing is found, than I would say that your dog has allergies. My only worry is that you said it's a ring, and crusty. This is usually what ringworm looks like. And subsequently will make your animals hair fall out, specially around the ring. This is also very itchy and can spread to humans. My thoughts would be to a. Change your dogs food to either Science diet Ultra or Z, or, you an also try Eukanuba Fish and Potatoes (but I warn you this food can make your pup fat so limit feeding). As for the itchy spots, I suggest you ask your vet to do a skin scrap of the area.. This will tell you if it is indeed a mite, or ringworm, or anything else foreign, which will aid in the treatment. I hope this helps, and I hope you are able to help your puppy =) Best of wishes! Post By stacy ( vet Tech) (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair1/2 a melatonin in the morning and 1/2 at night. you can get it at a drugstore. 3mg total a day. It made my doxie's fur grow back! Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairMy Longhaired doxie is 7 months old. Ever since he was a little pup, he was very itchy. But, I thought it was just a part of being a puppy. About a month ago, I noticed s few bumps along his spine. This progressed to multiple bumps that were very itchy. He scratched to a sore on his back, and I took him to a vet. He got a steroid injection - "allergy shot". It helped the itching, so the wound can heal. The puppy is also chaging his coat now. The vet said that food allergies are rare in dogs. He thinks its environmental. But, I think I will try some new food anyway. Post By Minnie (Guest Post) Daschund developing bumps over bodyI have a 11 month old doxie Oscar, smooth hair. Just recently I noticed that he began developing small bumps over his body. I was wandering if this is due to table food, snacks or something unknown from outside. Is this common with Doxie's? This is my first one. Post By Karen (Guest Post) Daschund DRY SKIN and DandruffMini Red Nose Precious 1 year old. I changed shampoos, bought new conditioner , changed food, changed flea meds, gave predisone, stopped bathing. He was on the Organic frozen food, Chicken loved it, then stopped eating, then went to Kibble, the best from Purina, Lamb, Bison, Salmon, Now Fish oil over Kibble and Bits. Coconut Oil. Vitamin e rubs. I am at my wits in. Vet Monthly. Loves happy hips chicken breasts treats. Allergy Shot was the last thing I did. Seems to have made it worse. I am so lost HELP Post By louise (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI know it's been a while since anyone has posted on here but I have some info that may help. I have a 2 year old mini short haired daschund who has had major hair loss. The tips of his ears, entire chest, underside, groin and upper thighs were either balding or entirely bald. We tried everything to get it to grow back. We found out that, yes this is a common problem with doxies but sometimes it is treatable. What worked for us though was a food change. We stopped giving Griffin any table scraps, NO treats, NOTHING with corn in it. We changed his food to Blue Buffalo which we buy at Petsmart. It has no corn in it. Ever since the change he has started growing his hair back. Anyway I would suggest trying a dog food that does not contain any CORN in it. Make sure the treats you give have no corn as well. A lot of dogs have corn allergies that cause itching and hair loss and surprisingly it was something that our vet didn't even address we figured it out on our own. Post By Stephanie (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairIm relieved to read all of these responses becuase my year and a half old doxie is losing his hair. It started on his ears and has now gone to his chest. i have taken him to the vet and $300+ later he isnt better. they gave me the lime dip to treat for ringworm, shampoos, and creams. Nothing seems to work, it breaks my heart. He is also taking omega 3 and 6. We live in montana and it is about to get cold here and i feel so bad for him. Do you think changing food is a good idea? Post By Shannon (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI have a 1 Year old Daschund named annie, she has started losing hair I took her to the vet and they put her on a antibiotic, which did not help. I have tried giving her a oatmeal bath and it did not help either. Would it help if I cut some of her fur off and applied a medicine directly to her skin? Post By Amy (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
lol yes I aim to please.. Post By daschund servant (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairWell I know this is old..but I'm glad i found this. My dachshund has been losing hair and I don't know why. I thought it might be ringworm, but it's not. I think it might be allergies but one lady said her dog ate fruit. Dogs aren't supposed to have most fruits and veggies because of the cyanide in the seeds are strong enough to kill a dog their size. But not us, so be careful with that. Post By Laura (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
I feel for all of you. I have a 1 yr old daschund named Oliver. He was the sweetest most loveable dog before he started to lose his hair. Now it seems like he's just so bad. He's lost all the hair on his ears and around his eyes. His back is starting to lose the hair as well. When I think about it I just want to cry. He's so tired of going to the veterinarian and getting shots. He's already use to the huge pills they give him, he doesn't even fight it, he usually leans in to take it with wimpering eyes. Post By Jessica (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairOur Daschound will be 8 july 10th. He is having hair loss on his back and on his sides. It too is dry looking and he also has blisters on his private area. We have taken him to the vet and have treated him with antibiotics. The vet seems to think that it is from gas heat allergies. One of his places on his back is the size of a large silver dollar. I have tried vit e, fish oil, tea tree sprays, and nothing seems to help. He has bee on ID food for about 4 years. Hopefully, since warm weather is almost here, and the heat will be off, he will start getting better. Post By frazier's mom (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI used happy jack for mine and he is 100% better. Post By ggv (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
STOP EVERYTHING! Visit this website and reconsider your dog's "allergy" problem. Post By Mia (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairWe recently took both our dachshunds to the vet with the same problem. They found fur mites, which is treated with a prescription once a month. Good Luck! Post By Melissa - Utah (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
I had a long hair doxie that liked to lay on top of the radiation at home. According to the vet that triggered hair loss. I covered the radiation area with blankets and the hair returned. Dont know if yours lay in front of the window all day which would be the same thing. Just an idea. Post By Christi Barrett (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairMy mini dox also has a patch on his mid back with missing hair. I am very concerned because there are stray dogs in my neighborhood. I thought it may be sarcoptic mange, but it's not really spreading. He also has blister-like bumps on his underside near his genitals and around hind legs. They don't resemble the patch. A vet asst. friend of mine said allergies, but I'm not so sure because of the patch on his back that showed up at the same time. I don't have the $ to go to vet until a week or so. Any suggestions or insight would be great! Post By i luv Big Boi (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hairi know this is a really old thread but I have a blue and tan doxie who lost almost all of her hair when she was switched from her puppy food. she does have a thyroid condition and medication from that has helped but part of it is food allergy related. I have found that Nature's Logic and Natural Balance both work great for allergies. Although living in Oklahoma she is still having some environmental allergy problem. Anyone who has a dog that is gaining weight for no reason that also has hair loss, I would highly recommend having checked by the local vet for a thyroid disorder as that was her most notable symptom. I just thought she was spoiled! Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hairi have a lab that is losing its hair under its chin but I don't know why, its not allergy related, we give her fish oil, but it keeps on coming out, her chin is now all black and hardish. Post By GG (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairSometimes the ingredients in the shampoo itself can irritate the daxies skin, such as tea tree and tree oils. i'd suggest maybe switching shampoo's and see if it makes a difference, or go and pay your local vet a visit. Post By Lisa (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hairgive them dog food with omega 6 and 3, and alot of it not just traces of it, daschunds have very dry skin and loose hair from it, My 2 are on castor pullox organix, but there are cheaper versions out there. if not squeeze a small amount of a fish oil caplet into thier food once a day it is the same thing Post By mandy (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hairall daschunds lose their hair, mine has been losing it for a while under chin but thats about it Post By Enter your name. (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
My puppy has a hair loss spot on his back...I saw a white crusty spot on his back the other day I thought it was dirt but I clean him up his hair came out. Post By Glen (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairIve had a blak and tan Dach for 3 months now and he started losing hair also, he was 10 months when i got him and was just getting off of puppy food. I took him to the vet, they checked for mange...nothing. They put him on steroid stuff for his itching problem but the hair he was losing down his spine and ears was a mystery. They made me give him medicated baths twice a week. I started looking around and eventually got him some Lamb and Rice diet meal. His hair is growing back, you may want to also try something called Brewers Yeast. It is a one a day pill and it may help with his coat. I started giving mine some about a month ago and its helping. They taste good to the dog and they are cheap. Its a thought, good luck Post By Chris (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
yea i have a almost 10 month female daschund (black and tan) and she had perfect hair when she was on the puppy food... but when we switched to the pedigree (healthy vitality) and started to lose her hair on her side and close to the private.... girl part...O_O anyways is there anything to help it? Post By Aaron (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI had a long hair and she had a bloated tummy and lost her hair in parts....some of this was an alergic reation to food she needed to be on a lamb and rice diet. She was also tested for thyroid and she was on medication for that. she started to get really bloated and found out she had a tumor on her pancreaus. she passed away a year ago on the fourth of july. Post By donna (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
The food allergy sounds very likely, but if by chance the loss is being caused by an exterior source, you might try this. It was passed on to me by Whole Health Connection in Picayune, MS. for a persistient dandruff condition. Ity work great for that and even works well on athletes foot and minor infected cuts. Post By JimB (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
my daschund will be two and he has started losing hair right above his stomach - could this be the same allergy related? Post By Paula. (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI KNOW THIS IS AN OLD THREAD BUT I HOPE MY ADVISE CAN SAVE SOMEONE YEARS OF HEARTACHE. AFTER BATTLING FOR TWO YEARS WITH WEEKLY SKIN OUTBREAKS WITH MY DASCHUND I FINALLY CONSULTED A KINEASIOLOGIST AND DISCOVERED SHE IS VIOLENTLY ALLERGIC TO ALL PROTEIN, BEEF, LAMB, CHICKEN, FISH AND CHEESE. SHE IS NOW ON THE HILLS ZD ANTI ALLERGEN DIET ONLY. THIS IS ALL SHE EATS OTHER THAN PIECES OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES AND SHE HAS NOT BROKEN OUT IN SIX MONTHS. Post By ALISON (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairMy Maggie has lost her hair and no one can seem to advise, it has cost me a fortune, she has bumps that appear and then looses her hair and she also suffers from bloatness of the tummy."" Post By Juanita (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairTry to change his food. I've been using Canidae Pet Food and had no problems with my dogie. You can go on the internet and find out if they sell it around your area or order it through the net Post By RGI (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI use aloe vera, or tree tea oil, or vitamin e on those hot spots...Use real aloe if you can. Post By pet lover too (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
I have had friends with furry pets who have given them Vitamin E capsules or even put it directly on the scratchy spot. You might want to check with your vet first. Post By TonyaG (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing Hair
I took my daschund to a dermatologist. Turns out Post By mandy (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairMy cairn has the same problem- skin scrapings, thyroid test and blood work showed nothing. We think it is allergies. She is on an expensive high anti-allergan diet food from the vet. She has flare ups still, though not as bad. She now takes antibotics every weekend and is on 1/4 tab. of prednisone every other day, to help keep the inflammation down. We also have a gentle natural shampoo. Good luck, it is hard when there isn't much we can do to help them. Post By Pat (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairI also agree with everyone who says it could be allergies...I forgot to mention that in my previous post. There's lots of things that it could be, depending on where she's losing her hair and any other symptoms. I think the best thing is to call the vet and describe the situation. Maybe document the hair loss, is it growing back after it falls out? If it's allergies it could be anything from the food she eats, the grass she plays in, the weather, etc. My brother's cat loses his hair on his tummy all the time and then it grows back. This has been happening since the cat was two and now he's fourteen. His vet hasn't done a thing about it! Good luck and you might have to be persistent if you've already been contacting your vet about it and not getting any results. Post by washburn6394 RE: Daschund Losing HairMy cat lost some hair on his ear right after I adopted him. His ear felt hot and he itched it a lot. I took him to the vet for his adoption check up and found he had ear mites. I went to PetSmart and bought some Petrelief Anti-itch spray. It is supposed to heal "hot spots" and relieve itching and control the spread of lesions. It says to consult a vet if symptoms persist. This stuff was for cats but maybe they make it for dogs as well...Have you contacted your vet? Mine is very good about listening to the problem and giving me ideas on how I can help my cats or dog on my own (if it's not a serious thing.) Then if it persists, I can make an appointment. This has saved me a lot of money over the 20 years I've had my pets at their office (since I was ten!) Post by washburn6394 RE: Daschund Losing Hairit could also be an allergy, my cat did that and she got a shot from the vet to take care of it Post By Tricia (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairMy bichon frise was having the same problem. Her vet has diagnosed allergies, and she takes allergy pills every day. I also have a spray that I use on the spots, and of course we use a very gentle and non-drying dog shampoo. I have read articles on the internet about food allergies and wonder if anyone has had any luck with the all natural food diet for their pet? Post By Peggy (Guest Post) RE: Daschund Losing HairIf you have ruled out fleas, check with the vet to see if she has a skin infection. Good luck! Post by MamaJude RE: Daschund Losing HairI have a doxie that has flaky patches as well, it doesn't seem to itch for her though. But I rub the spots with a light hand cream and it doesn't seem to harm her. Post by FFL RE: Daschund Losing Hair
My pet began to do that too. My vet suggested a tyroid test. Sure enough that was it. A pill once of month stopped his coat from being like a cat lol. Post By edieparks (Guest Post) |
