Use A Hair Dryer To Remove Contact Paper From Shelves

While cleaning out my pots and pans cabinet last week, I noticed that the contact paper was looking loose at the edges. I decided that I was going to pull it up and replace it. Well, the bottom shelf of the cabinet came out fine. However, the upper shelf did not. It ripped and tore and looked a mess! Believe me, when it said "Contact Paper", it meant CONTACT! That stuff was not budging!

Well, I went online and screened on HOW TO GET CONTACT PAPER OFF WOOD. The website had several suggestions to remedy this problem. It stated that you could use a hair dryer. Well, I used a blow dryer and heated up small spaces and then pulled like crazy and got the messy stuff up. It took me 2-1/2 hours to do the 10 foot LONG cabinet and I was on all fours the entire time with my head stuck in the cabinet as well. WHAT A SIGHT! Thank goodness it was a lower cabinet and not overhead.

Needless to say, I will NEVER use contact paper again! It is not worth the misery of getting it off your wood. I re-lined the cabinet with some UNGLUED wall paper left over from a long ago project and tacked it down at each corner with a heavy duty stapler. I figure it will be MUCH easier to pull out four staples than spend another 2-1/2 hours on my hand and knees when the cabinet needs to be refreshed again.

RE: Use A Hair Dryer To Remove Contact Paper From Shelves

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have 70's style contact paper inside my kitchen cabinets and have not been able to get it all off. I'm going to try this method. As you well know, there are pieces and rips all over from my trying to remove it. lol I was going to try wallpaper removing methods. But I think I'll try this way first.

Warm regards, Carol

A hair dryer will help you get tape, labels, etc. off just about anything. :-)

Oh, I so agree with the contact paper. I would never use it on any of my shelves. I, too, have spent hours trying to remove it.
