How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

My nasty neighbor lets his big dog do business in my yard. Is there anything that can be used to repel dog? Can't talk to idiot owner!

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I am so in the same boat! We have leash laws here but people just don't care. I have been over several times with one neighbor to talk with them about their dog, didnt care, then started throwing poop in their yard, didn't care. Finally threw on front porch, got them to build a fence.

But two weeks later? yYah dog is out the front door crapping in my yard! My 2 yr old has stepped in it and fell in it. I have four of my own and NONE go out of my yard. I walk my dogs I pick up. I finally called the pound so that problem is solved but now they hate me I seem to be the bad person. As of two weeks ago now I have the OTHER neighbor letting his dam dog out and she comes to crap in my yard.

I have been over once to talk to him and things seemed to go well but as of this morning I found her doing it again in my yard! My dogs when they are let out go and eat it! I am so sick of this! I can contain 4 why can't people contain 1? I feel like they don't have respect for my property and better yet my own son! I was on here to see what others have done.

I am tempted to go and get a paint gun however I don't want to hurt the dog, but it makes me smile knowing she could walk in their house covered with pink paint!
I cannot afford to fence either, I just don't know why something so simple can be so hard for people. Keep your dam dog IN your yard! Its the law here.

I don't want to feud with the other neighbors, but I am not going to sit there and just clean up their dogs poop either. ARRGGH! Any suggestions? The dog is skittish, I cannot catch her at all. She runs.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

Well, I have 2 dogs that are never allowed to be loose. This is for my dogs safety as well as respect for our neighbors. My brother has told me that one way to stop people from letting their dogs run loose or get into your garbage is to use exlax. When their dog is constantly getting diarrhea they presume they are getting into something they shouldn't be and keep them at home. Might be a good idea for some of these problems although it is to bad you cant feed it to the irresponsible owners instead!

So tired of Irresponsible owners

I see many others are having the same problem. My next door neighbors have a little dog that they very closely supervise (but to make sure that he does his business in my yard!). I have talked to them about it, complained to our housing district office, filed a complaint, and even have it on video tape). Finally got tired of it when my kids were outside playing and almost fell in a "PILE" u know what i mean.

Went over knocked on the door told them get over and clean it up now which he did. Figured he would watch more closely but he still does not care. I should not have to go over and tell him to clean up after every use since they do stand right there and watch him do his business.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

We had a good fence. Until this past week. There is a rather large Terrier looking dog that has taken up with digging UNDER it to get into my back yard, to have his way with my pug.

We have spent Christmas holiday having to take my dog out into our FENCED IN YARD, because she cant be left unattended.

Late last night, I heard scratching on the door and sleepily got up thinking I must have left our dog outside, to my surprise it was THAT DOG! It had dug back into our yard AGAIN and was scratching on the door.

My husband just plugged another 4 holes, and is furious. This dog has ruined our yard, our fence, and I'm sure our dog will have a nice batch of unknown puppies.

I'm so angry. Hubby wants to shoot the dog. I just want it to go away. It has to belong to somebody, though it doesn't have a collar. Its been so rainy and is muddy, but the dog is white and CLEAN. I find it hard to believe it is a stray.

How can I keep it from digging under my fence! HELP!

M44 device filled with pepper spray. Or try the scarecrow motion activated animal repellent.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I am past frustrated. I live on the very end of a cul de sac and for some reason my lawn is "poop central". The thing that makes me the most upset is the neighbors on the right of me has 2 huge labs that they keep outside all day, but when it is time to poop, she lets them run free in the cul de sac. I guess so that she doesn't have to clean poop from her yard.

This is my first home and it is past frustrating to come home to your home and there is a mound of poop in the front yard ...like it is a piece of lawn furniture or something. Will someone tell me what can I do? Can I get hidden security cams and leave them running all day? Is there something I can put down to discourage dogs. I can afford a fence but I feel I shouldn't be forced to buy one because people are inconsiderate. Any suggestions are welcome.

I have this same problem and I've been looking for ways to keep the dogs out of my yard I too like the black pepper and cayenne pepper one too. But to Shelia that reported on June 23, if I were you I would put out some food and catch the dog and take him/her to the pound and let the owners know what I did so they can go get it.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I have two words for you

Buck Lure

Now it won't work for all situations but if you can get your hands on the dog or get near enough to it to spray it you have solved your problem. Everytime the dog comes in your yard give it a nice coating of buck lure and pretty soon your neighbor will start keep their animal up. You see buck lure is made to attract deer in hunting season and is made from deer urine so it smells like the dog has been rolling in something really nasty. Because it is made to attract deer it has a strong scent that will carry over a long distance. If every time the dog gets out it comes home reeking of urine and that little added musky odor that means that a doe is ready to mate... well lets just say that is one dog who will be force to stay home. Best of all you don't take the heat. Dogs naturally gravitate to smelly substances so unless someone sees you putting the buck lure on the dog you are not going to be held responsible.

There is also boar lure which works especially well in rural areas as it makes domestic pigs crazy. With either one the dog will make everything it touches... kids, clothes, carpet etc stink to high heaven and it has the added benifit of making other dogs treat it in a manner it finds confusing.

Don't get it in the dogs eyes.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I am so upset at all the dogs in our yard ALL THE TIME! We have a beagle, and he is let out on a chain, of course. It makes it hard to defend himself when the neighbors' dogs all come over to fight. Plus, we have kids. Both of them have been attacked by dogs in the past. Once on Halloween a lady answered the door when we were trick or treating, and her dog bit my daughter's face.

Then once when we were walking to school a dog ran out and attacked me and my younger daughter on a walkpath and we had to call 911 and go to the emergency room. Now I'm expected to put up with dogs in my yard? I don't care about "humane." If you love your dog, keep it out of my yard. Because it sure isn't humane for a little child to get stitches or be disfigured from a dog that "never hurt anybody before."

I have 2 dogs who are owned by a guy who stays down the road. The dogs seem to hang out with my dog but keep eating his food and tearing up all of my stuff in the yard. The dogs have killed cats and other animals in my yard as well

Well I had enough. I put out a rat trap with food on it and locked my dog up.So one of the dogs went to eat the food and snap. Haven't seen them in anyone yard but their own again.

I have a problem with my neighbor complaining about my dog pooping in her yard. But in fact we always make sure he goes poop in the specified area in our yard and is back in the house. How do I deal with her complaining. Please let me know.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

Shoot a shot gun, not at them ofcourse. We have a problem with coyotes hanging out in the lower part of our yard, so I usually take a shot gun and shoot it in the air or at a tree close by. The sound scares them off and they don't return.... only one problem, can't really do this in the city... buy a pellet gun or paint ball gun and pop them. It doesn't hurt the animals, but they won't come back. This might sound inhumane to some people and I apologize if I have offended anyone. Our dogs would actually go to our neighbor's house and I told them to buy a pellet gun and pop them. They did, and my babies have not returned to bother them. Honestly, it does not hurt them, just make sure to hit them in the backside and not the head.... good luck!

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

Boy have I got a good one for someone to figure out. My aunt & uncle live right next door to me. Let me start by explaining the have never wanted anyone's pets near their yard and will "take them off". My cousin got a very expensive dog about 6 years ago and they all love this dog. But they also think he's the most perfect and that everyone else should think so too. They don't like dog poop in their yard. They have over 11 acres. They have walked him around my yard since day 1 at all times of the day or night. Not to mention the invasion of our privacy but we are ebay sellers. We sell return/overstock sporting goods and it is very common for us to be in the yard checking tents, tubes, and other things. HE PEES ON EVERYTHING! I have done everything from hinting nicely to cussing them out and they still bring him. I use to think very highly of these people like they were second parents, but our relationship is far from that now. I can't stand the sight of them and the only solution I feel we have left is to move. Please anyone with advice, HELP! I don't want to have to call animal control and I sure don't want to do anything to hurt the dog.

Wow, DB - it sounds like you live up the street from me! I've dealt with "harmless" dogs like this but certainly not to this extent. Like many people in this forum, I've got pets of my own and am still, amazingly, able to be respectful of my neighbors' property. Really wish there was a better way to go about dealing with this problem. I'm going to try the pepper solution and see how it works.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

When a neighbor is disrespectful to me and allows its pet to defecate in my yard I simply watch where they live and return the feces to them by putting it in their yard. Once my children got so tired of this one dog they painted a happy face on its arse with hair color and the family got the hint. The dog stays in their yard now. I have also found the pepper and chili powder helpful as well.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I live just outside the city limits in a country setting. Most of the people around here just let their dogs run free, which can be quite annoying, but until yesterday I didn't consider it a huge problem. Our neighbor that lives across the street brought home a full grown pitt/boxer mix. He brought it over to introduce the dog to my husband and assure him that he was not dangerous (which we found odd).

Last night while I was outside watching my 3 year old daughter play, the dog came over and I could not make it leave. It spotted one of my cats (which I normally keep indoors unless they are supervised by me) and took after her. She made it up a tree, but the dog relentlessly hunted for her. I was very concerned and started heading for the house with my daughter to keep her safe. My other cat, unaware that there was a dog in the yard, came walking towards me. I quickly picked him up and kept moving towards the house.

My husband was trying to get the dog out of the yard, the neighbor had finally taken notice to my loud screaming for him to get his dog before it killed my cats, and then all hell broke loose. The dog spotted the cat in my arms and came toward me in a hard run. My husband yelled out to warn me, but there was no where for me to go. I tossed the cat into our boat and barely missed being attacked. To my complete shock, the dog still went after the cat in the boat, leaping almost 4 feet into the air to clear the side, chased him out the other side and into the woods. I was sure my cat was dead.

The owner finally got hold of the dog's collar, but insisted that the near attack was my fault because his dog hates cats, so I should not have been holding him. I did my best to contain my anger and explained to him that on my property I can do whatever I want and that he was in the wrong for allowing his dog to run free. He later apologized to my husband for the disturbance and swears it will not happen again. Unfortunately, this is his 5th dog in 4 years. He has let all of his pets run free and they inevitably end up missing or as road kill. Thankfully, my cat survived, but it took me close to an hour to get him to come down from a tree.

I live on 13 acres and my house is set off of the road. I have barbed wire fencing and gates, but the dogs can come right through, and our property is too big to fence any other way economically. I came to the country for solitude, and refuse to live in fear. Today I found myself surveying my property every few minutes and guarding over my daughter. I am afraid for her safety. I do not trust that he will keep his dog under control and I plan to call the Sheriff's office if I even see this dog out without a leash.

I bought some pepper spray today for protection and I put my garden hoe next to the door so I can arm myself when I go outside. My other neighbor had a suggestion which involves a rifle and a large hole, which I might just consider.

I have a digging dog and mine likes to dig holes (even moves large rocks) and gets out of our 1 acre fenced in yard. I am going to try these suggestions to try to keep my 1 dog from getting out of our yard. With 8 different neighbors, our digger keeps us on our toes.

my dog is the problem

It seems to me that my dogs don't get it. They just keep going back to the neighbor's yard. The only problem is that one of my neighbors shoots my dogs with bb guns instead of talking to me about the problem. I heard my dog yelp and looked out the window and saw her running. I did not confront him because I'm in the wrong but what if that were your child?

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I once had a neighbor that let his cat "out" every night. I found that his cat was the one ripping into my garbage every night knockng cans over and spreading it over the side of my house. I made a few anonymous calls explaining his cat was makng a mess and that it would be appreciated if he kept inside at night. Nothing changed and I was tired of cleaning up garbage. I finally caught the cat in the act with his butt sticking up out of the can while digging for supper. I grabbed this pure white cat and brought it into the house and proceded to give him a food color bath. A few drops here, rub it in and a few drops there of a different color there, and rub it in. When I was done he looked like a multicolored clown cat. The colors really showed up bright on his white fur and the food color although dyeing him for a few days was completely harmless to the animal. They got the point, that cat never came out at night again.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

I like the black pepper and cayenne pepper idea the best. Doesn't hurt the dog and keeps him out of your yard. But first, I think I'd videotape the dog in your yard, so you have evidence if they deny that their dog does this. The police will appreciate the evidence.

One of my neighbor's dogs charged at me and bit me several times. I did what I thought was right: I called the police on the owner, I took him to court, I sued him, and he just got madder and madder at me. I learned to carry pepper spray whenever I had to walk past their house, to protect myself against him and the dog. Thank goodness, they finally moved away a couple of weeks ago, after almost 5 years of harassment.

Some people are so mad at the world that they use their children and their pets as weapons. They let the kids and the dogs run free to do what they want, and if you try to stop them, you become the target of their rage. These are very angry people and trying to reason with them probably ain't gonna work. The police cannot protect you 24/7 if these people want to harass you. So, I'd try the black pepper/cayenne pepper.

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

Several years ago we had a neighbor who sometimes walked her dog on a leash and she would stop and let her dog poop in our yard. Other times she would just let her dog out and she'd go back into the house. Her dog thought our yard was it's own personal bathroom. My husband tried talking to the woman but it did no good. So he started picking up the poop and throwing it back into her yard, getting closer and closer to her front door. Once she stepped in it a couple of times she "got the message" that we were serious. Then they moved away. Hooray!!

RE: How to Keep Dogs out of Your Yard

Simple remedy: have canned cat food on hand, use it for bait, capture dog, take to animal shelter. Owner pays a fee to reclaim his/her dog, learns lesson. That or a good fence.
