Thank you for your ideas. I didn`t explain properly about the panels I`m afraid .They aren`t actually wood, but 10ft x 6 ft sheets that we glued to the wall. It then gives the effect of wood and they have a shiny smooth finish. Thanking you.

Well,some folks have thought of painting but another suggestion is to attach sheet rock over the wood panels.Tape and sand the joints.Then you could paint or wall paper over a smooth surface.You should be able to do the job your selves.

If you paint them, you may have to apply a base coat or roughen them up with sandpaper.

We did this last year when we updated our hallway.
On the upper half, we covered it with a thick wallpaper. The grooves had to be spacked first but it came out wonderfully.
On the lower half, we painted over it with a light cream colred paint, and then put a chair rail up between the two sections.
