Carpet has a mat underneath and it could be mildewed. You should borrow a carpet cleaner or rent one cause that can make ya sick. Steam clean with either Tide with Febreeze in it, or a very good carpet shampoo that advertises pet odor on it. Make sure you suck all the water back out so it doesn't stay wet long, and put fans on. If you pull up the carpet and their is mildew on the mat, you probably should discard.

removing musty smell from mattress
I dropped a lot of water on my mattress and I forgot about it for a few days. When I got home I noticed it was still wet, and now it smells terrible. How can I get this smell out without buying a new mattress?

My washing timer broke and water everywhere. It is still wet and smell like cats piss. Awful. I put lysol in my shampooer and cleaned the areas. I got all the water out I can, and man, it smells bad. How do I get rid of this?

Vinegar also works good, I used windex and vinegar in mine. Just basically covered the carpet so that it's barely damp, and just repeat till the smell is gone :)

My carpet flooded, and is almost dry. But I'm worried about the gross smell and the possibility of health problems. What about adding bleach to water in my steam cleaner. Would that kill the spores? I sure would hate to have to rip it up.

I once left a sweater soaking in my laundry tub and that was the night the water softener went off. What a mess. A friend lent us there wet dry vaccum to get most of the water and then we put down lots of newspaper. As it got wet we kept replacing it. The print in the paper absorbed the odor and when we sold the house you never would have guessed that it was once covered in water. Not sure if this will work if the carpet is already dry. Ammonia works well. You can put some in a cup or container in the corner. I would try putting some on the carpet itself. I use ammonia with washing detergent to get the musty, moldly odors out of clothes.
