Make Your Own Liquid Fabric Softener

Instead of using toxic fabric softener and dryer sheets, mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with a $.99 container of hair conditioner. It is very inexpensive and works great whether you pour directly into washer in final rise cycle or use on a terry cloth for the dryer. Please recycle!

I have been using vinegar as fabric softener for a long time now, after reading all about it on this web-site. Vinegar and bleach don't cause fumes, it's ammonia and bleach that do.

Why would you mix conditioner with vinegar? Vinegar itself is a softener as well as eliminating static electricity.

Using the natural softener will not cause any caustic effect if you have used bleach in the load. It isn't ammonia. I have been doing this for a while and it is much safer than what is on the market shelves.

Be sure that you do not use this in a load that has been bleached -- chlorine bleach mixed with vinegar will emit toxic fumes.
